Difference Makers: An Action Guide for Jesus Followers

Rate this book
Christians want to make a difference, but sometimes the ministry bar is raised so high that only those who are "go-getters" can do it. Mission work can look like a drastic life change, unattainable to those who aren't in full-time ministry. So the average church member is left without a mission.Pastor and author M. Scott Boren shows how ordinary Christians can make a huge impact through their everyday lives. Boren teaches church members how to make a difference for God where they are. At work. With friends. In the neighborhood. Mission work doesn't need to be a life-altering event. It can be simply living a life that honors Jesus and points others to him.

This book proclaims itself as "An action guide for Jesus followers". It's a 40 day devotional aimed at helping you live out your faith right where you are. Anyone can be a difference maker, not just those in a 'ministry' job. Boren has separated these devotionals into six parts: Part 1 Encountering the Difference Maker Part 2 Experiencing a Difference-Making Team Part 3 Engaging Your World by Paying Attention Part 4 Engaging Your World by Reflecting Part 5 Engaging Your World by Acting Part 6 Engaging Your World by Being a Faithful Presence Each section begins with a "Lectio Devina", a passage of scripture to reflect upon and pray through for the duration of that group of devotional readings. A discussion guide for small groups is included and I think this book would certainly be a great study for a group. Boren says "Where is God at work? He is working in the lives of your neighbours and those in your networks. Your job is to learn to read what God is doing there. Ask God to give you ears to hear what he is doing in their lives and how you might get involved." That, in a nutshell, is what this book is about, with practical how-to application examples and ideas. I enjoyed this book and was challenged as I did the daily readings. I find sometimes we think of making a difference in the world for God ... and when you put it that way it must be a BIG thing, right? Most of the time it's the small things that add up to a person being a difference maker in a big way.
