That was her first impression of hot cop Jackson Rutherford. Hisintensity and watchful gaze made single mom Vanessa Garner rethinkher no-man policy. With three kids and a checkered past, she workedhard just to survive. But somehow, the Southern lawman charmedhis way into her life. And vowed protection when she needed it most.As her dangerous ex made vicious threats on her family, Jacksonplayed the white knight and wouldn't let Vanessa walk away from thepossibilities. Falling in love with him was a crazy idea. And yet maybethis true-blue denim-clad detective was exactly what she deserved.
This one featured a heroine who despite everything had put her life together. The heroine had a shitty life, raped at 14 and left on her own, she made bad choices, drugs, men and had 3 kids (with different fathers), but after her last boyfriend, who was also her pimp beat her half to death while she was carrying she got the courage to get clean and make a life for herself and her kids. She meets the hero, a cop at an event honouring her and while there sadly runs into her ex who wants her daughter. I liked how the hero weighs the consequences of getting involved with the heroine, not judging her for her past, but also weighing what her presence would mean in his life. He wins her and her kids over slowly. One thing that bothered me was the heroine's ex and how the heroine was still caught up in the grip of still not trusting the law but that made sense because the law often does fail people. All in all this book tackled some very complicated issues in a decent manner.
