Ernest William Hornung known as Willie, was an English author, most famous for writing the Raffles series of novels about a gentleman thief in late Victorian London.
In addition to his novels and short stories Hornung wrote some war verse, and a play based on the Raffles stories was produced successfully. He was much interested in cricket, and was "a man of large and generous nature, a delightful companion and conversationalist".
Catherine "Tiny"Luttrell is the daughter of a sheep ranch owner in Australia. and is the youngest of three siblings, who are her brother Herbert and sister Ruth. The story opens with Tiny saying good bye to her childhood home at the ranch before going to London for the season to visit the recently married Ruth. But, she also says goodbye to Jack Swift the recently promoted ranch hand who was one of her early meaningless love afairs as everyone knows Tiny loves to flirt and has many admirers. There are two other stops on this trip to visit Ruth the English countryside and Portugal the former for some relaxation the latter for a business venture concerning Ruth's husband. I don't really want to get into spoilers so she meets another of her trysts from Australia in England will she choose the proper English gentleman and therefore his country or rekindle with her love of Australia through Jack Swift. Some interesting themes are here there are a couple jabs at colonialism as Australia was a British colony at the time though not very biting jabs really. Several characters are said to become introspective for the first time so knowing onesself and decieving oneself is there as well. There is some good word play as well such as "her affection was no mere affectation" My final verdict is the plot is pretty standard it boils down to a love triangle but, one where one prospect is the ideal noble man of the time and the other is the loving bluecollar man there is some social conflict there. The side characters all have motivations Ruth wants a proper marriage, for Tiny because she was raised to desire one and feels responsible as the eldest. Erskine Ruth's husband wants Tiny to be happy becuse he enjoys her company and wants her to enjoy life. Overall I think this book is held up by good thematic writing, enjoyable prose and likable side characters. It's main conflict is ok at best and a love triangle at worst. It also really loves to compare Australia to England which can be a little repetitive. Tiny is atypicall for the time a flirty woman who charms everyone into liking her any ways and is looking for a serious relationship but is unsure what that even looks like, but the type has been done since. The book isnot outstanding but it is a well executed book so four stars.
