Richard Dehan was the pen name of Clotilde Graves who was born at Buttevant Castle in County Cork in 1863. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clotild...

I was introduced to her name and work by a journalist friend here in Cork, although she had worked as a journalist, dramatist (she wrote the pantomime Puss in Boots) and artist for years under her own name she produced, this, her first novel and under the pseudonym Richard Dehan in 1911 at the age of 46.

I found the book heavy going at first but enjoyable once I became used to the author's style. A good yarn and a tale of redemption which had me hooked after the third chapter. Much of it is set in South Africa during the Boer War and it is very jingoistic, but the description of a town under siege was realistic enough for my tender imagination.

The book was filmed in 1915 but I doubt anything survives. An enjoyable yarn for a summer evening.
