Aretino's outrageous follow-up to Il Marescalco seems to me unique in the Italian commedia erudita. It is inspired by and refers to I Suppositi, La Mandragola, and La Calandra, for certain, but it is doing lots of its own things. For one, there is no marriage in this play. In fact, there are no young lovers at all, and, indeed, no young women! Quite a surprise, really. Further, the men and women who play the pranks at the center of this play receive no punishment for their vicious antics. La Cortigiana moves at a breakneck pace, alternating between two very similar gulling plots but spending the majority of its time making fun of the city of Rome itself, as well as the papacy.
