This 1999 edition was revised by Debra Hughes, curator of collections and exhibits and Carol Hagglund. It takes its name from Eleuthere Irenee du Pont (1771-1834) who founded E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company as a family enterprise for the manufacture of black powder.
If you explore the Brandywine historical sites don’t overlook the Hagley Museum, site of the du Pont black powder mills and associated residence. This book summarizes the property well but an in person visit is recommended.
