The Life and Works of Alfred Sisley, 1839-1899 Contains 50 paintings faithfully reproduced in full colour. A fascinating study by Janice Anderson of the painter often referred to as the 'English Impressionist'
Alfred Sisley (1839-1899: http://www.wikipaintings.org/en/alfre...), born and raised in Paris, but of English parentage (hence, called 'the English Impressionist'), was a magnificent painter who was but little appreciated during his lifetime, and who therefore suffered on the edge of poverty (with his wife and two children) after his father's bankruptcy during the Franco-Prussian war. Yet for all that, Sisley never gave up painting. He was a close friend of Monet, and was one of Durand-Ruell's painters.
This little book (picked up very cheaply in a library bin), though in small format, presents some 30-40 nicely colored prints, with short and sensitive accompanying descriptions.
The three pictures I'll use to illustrate his work all come from the middle of his career.
Floods at Port-Marley, 1876 oil on canvas, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen, France
Village by the Seine (1876) oil on canvas, Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia
Tug Boat on the Loing at Saint-Mammès, 1877 oil on canvas, Musée du Petit Palais, Paris, France
