Excellent, detailed, if sometimes dry, retelling of the American Catholic Church's response to the 60s cultural revolution as seen through the life of John Cardinal Krol. Informative, based on primary documents, and well written.
Jones goes over the Catholic Church's battle against the breaking of the Hollywood Production Code, fight against Pornography and secular humanism in general. Its somewhat shocking to see how overtly anti-Catholic many Protestant and Jewish intellectuals and media types were in the 60s. And I write that as a non-Catholic.
Krol comes off as a good man and Catholic, but naive about his opponents aims and motivations. If you have an interest in the Catholic Church or the USA 1960s this is worth a read. Just don't expect a fun time. This is scholarship not pop history.
