It seemed like a good idea at the time; glossy text, maps for locating the treasures of Rome & the Vatican, with detailed notes on the developmental history of each area. It didn't take long for this large, weighty tour book to disappear into my backpack so I could better observe what was directly in front of me. Then, with the brilliance of hindsight, when I returned to my hotel room and consulted this guide, I wanted to kick myself for all that I had missed seeing. Unless I sojourn in the city, this is more overwhelming than I need.
