This is a collection of oral histories about rural childhoods in Wessex in the early part of the 20th century. I have an especial fondness for it because it started me on a long binge of reading memoirs of British childhood. There happen to be an unusual amount of good memoirs of this time period, many of them quite neglected.
I loved this oral history of old day Wessex. Such a vivid picture of life before the Great War. I feel it’s so important to know about the history of pockets of the world, and this wonderful compilation hits the spot. It’s one of those that gets you thinking, reminiscing, aching.. A truly beautiful collection of a time gone by, in a place changed by the evolvement of years, by people who walked it. I closed this book feeling happy and nostalgic.
