My rivals are Dons; I am a King.

Three brides have been chosen for my pleasure and displeasure. One of them will become a King’s consort; the others will be discarded.

Until my decision is made, I get to feast on them all.

They are mine.

After the demise of my uncle, the O’Sullivan family has yet to choose the new Don. With two brothers and a vengeful, unhinged cousin also vying for the position, tension is rising in an already dangerous business.

Especially since no one knows that I’m responsible for my uncle’s disappearance.

Enter the Hands of Kings, a global cult with the ability to replace CEOs, Presidents, and Popes. And their leader, Victor, has his eye on me.

Few men were made to be Kings and Victor has plans for me, plans that do not require my approval.

But an unseen enemy is hiding and they know my secrets. They are manipulating the people around me with the intention of taking my crown.

A King is not so easily dethroned, especially when threats are made toward me and mine.

No one shall have my brides.

When Kings Rise is a dark mafia romance, intensified by the presence of a cult, with mature themes, mature language, and very mature steam.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

“When you don't really own your life, what use are dreams?”

An interesting read. Although I did read the synopsis before getting into this, I was still surprised by the contents of this book. I liked the premise, the characters (and there were many) were all interesting in their own right, and the storytelling was nicely done albeit lacking at times as far as information goes.

There's a lot going on story-wise that really leaves you with a lot of questions. Many things happen that although they are interesting and entertaining to read, they just leave me questioning why they're happening in the first place. There's also so many important (at least, I assume they are) characters with little info. on them that just leave me with even more questions but are completely left unanswered. The story is very clearly unfinished though, and ends in a way that tells us that more will definitely be revealed later in future books which would explain the lack of explanation on several plot points and characters. This is understandable but I guess I just wish it didn't have so many. It was incredibly plot-heavy, way more than I thought it would be at 239 pages (the ARC I received).

I'm primarily a romance reader so it did frustrate me that I still don't know who exactly our MMC will end up even as I reached the last page. The story starts off with Diarmuid being provided 3 "brides" for him to choose from. He gets a fair amount of time with all three. The spice was 🔥🔥🔥. And although I thoroughly enjoyed what they all got up to together and the relationship they have (Diarmuid and the girls as well as the girls with each other), I was hoping to at least get a bit of an inkling as to who he'll end up choosing later on. But we don't get that and it's still up in the air by the end of the book, which isn't entirely bad...just that I personally would have liked something more tangible as far as the main pairing goes.

Overall, this book was entertaining. It was dark and full of intrigue which I really liked. It definitely did its job with sweeping me into the moment at times, leaving me legitimately worried or just rooting for the characters. It wasn't perfect but I still enjoyed it nonetheless, enough so that I actually want to pick up the next book just to know what happens next.

• Virgin heroine(s)
• A lot of Violence and Crime
• Mafia (MMC is a hitman)
• Cult
• Spicy!! (with some group scenes)
• Multi-POV (Diarmuid and all 3 brides)

Diarmuid O'Sullivan was an Irish Duke and an assassin for the O'Sullivan mafia, but they were under the control of the sinister Hand of Kings. As with all future Kings, he was provided with three brides... only one would be his Consort.

Each has a reason to play the game... but none were given a choice. Sold by their parents for a richer life. One would be Diarmuid's wife, but none would be free from the life of sexual slavery.

Amira who is determined to fix what her father destroyed when their family fell from grace by the hand of a King. She needed to escape her drunk mother's brutality.

Selene had the perfect life until she turned sixteen and found out that the only reason she had been born was as an offering to the mafia to further their greed.

Niamh wanted to protect her younger sister Elle so she could follow her dreams of being a ballerina. If she is picked her sister will be safe.

This book is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Warning: this book is a dark romance with non-consent. Think of The Bachelor and Diarmuid is given three brides. Only one will be chosen to be his wife, but he plans to have fun with all of them before making his choice.

This book is action-packed and full of danger from start to finish. It is full of intrigue as the hunt for a killer becomes the focus. Even as the killer is determined to not be found.

If you like dark romance you will love this book. This book does not have a HEA and will leave you with a MAJOR twist and a cliffhanger that takes this story to another dangerous level. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed this book, I couldn’t put it down after I picked it up. This book follows Diarmuid and his three brides, Selene, Niamh and Amira. Amira being the least favorite for me, I truly could not stand her, she just seemed like she was doing too much and thought everyone was out to get her when in reality the only one out to get her was her own mother lol. With that being said just because I didn’t like her doesn’t mean her tantrums weren’t entertaining. This focused more on the mafia side which was great but I really needed Diarmuid to make his decision, who did he stay with? I especially love that this book was written in multiple POVs. I loved getting to read from each of their POVs and I cannot wait for the next book.

This is the first book I have read from this author, and it won't be the last. I struggled with the beginning of the book, but about halfway through, I became completely invested. I don't read much with FF, so I think that is why I had a hard time in the beginning. The storyline definitely sucked me in and left me wanting more.

This does end on a cliffhanger, but the second part comes out in a few weeks. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Thank you, Grey's Promotions and Vi Carter, for the ARC.

There was good potential for this book. I could get behind the MMC being morally gray and having three women all to himself until he needs to decides which one he is going to marry. The FMC's all different and they have their own reasons to be at the hands of the Kings.

I wanted this book to end once there were turns that I felt just took away from what I thought this book was. It didn't make sense to me and to have the MMC be all dark and mysterious turn caring to his brides without easing it in was like what.

I received this as an ARC for an honest review.

Phenomenal dark romance that takes you just short of the brink of believing all you know is evil. Vi Carter never disappoints. Impatiently waiting for the next book.

This is book one in a series. It is not a stand alone but will be followed by “When Kings Bend” in the future.
It is a very dark mafia romance. Deals with an a cult, has very mature themes and explicit sexual scenes with MFFF, mature language and totally an adult read.
Diarmuid O’Sullivan is our MMC.
He is Hand of the Kings Assassin.
In book one he meets his three “brides” given by head of “Hands Of Kings” Victor. Three virgins trained to be a bride. And Three very different personalities. There’s Selene (the trouble maker), Amira (innocense with a touch of darkness), and Niamh (water loving athletic). Needless to say, even with training these girls personalities cause problems for Diarmuid.
This is a merging of the cult, of priests and of mafia.
This is built around Diarmuid and a choice he made. Now he has to try and protect his brides from who ever is coming after him.

Wow, this was an extremely astounding book, the story was written well and the characters were captivating. If you like a good Mafia with a twist of cult and who killed the cousins father, Diarmuid's uncle. Diarmuid needs to get married so he has a choice between three lovely ladies they are all unique in their own way, now the head of the Syndicate are like puppeteers they pull the strings, they can make you King or not and that is what Diarmuid wants. The head puppeteer is the one that gives Diarmuid orders to take someone out. This book was so deliciously dark and kinky.

When Kings Rise by Vi Carter, is the first book in The O'Sullivan's Brides Series, Diarmuid O'Sullivan is an Irish duke and an assassin for the O'Sullivan mafia, under the control of the sinister Hand of Kings. According to their traditions, all future kings are provided with three brides and from them he is supposed to choose only one to become his consort. For these women this is the opportunity to achieve a life of wealth, but they do not imagine that if they are not chosen, the life that awaits them will not be one of freedom, but that they would end up as slaves. These three chosen women have been prepared for this, but all three could not be more different from each other. Amira, is determined to fix what her father destroyed when her family fell from grace at the hands of a king and uses this opportunity also as an escape from the brutality of her drunk mother, of the three she is the most dramatic and likes to call the attention. Selene lived a relatively quiet but affectionless life and when she turned sixteen she discovered that the only reason she was born was as an offering to the mafia. Niamh primary wish is to protect her younger sister, Ella, so that she can follow her dream of being a ballerina, so if she is chosen, her sister will be safe. But everything is a power game and these women will find themselves in the middle of machinations and revenge, with many questions, which when they try to get the answers will put themselves in danger. But to know what will happen to these characters we must wait for the next book, where pawns will become players.
This story is full of schemes, threats, suspicions, this story is for me like a wilder Bachelor with a darker atmosphere, with deadlier power games and without being very clear who are allies or enemies. This story definitely caught my attention, I couldn't put it down once I started reading it and I will be very attentive waiting for the next book. Totally Highly Recommended!

¡Totalmente Altamente Recomendada!

4.5 stars! The Presentation.....

When Kings Rise is the first installment in The O'Sullivan's Brides Series and it is not a complete story.

As I read the blurb and soon started the book, I was not sure what was coming my way, and since polyamorous troupe(MFFF) is not very up my alley, I found myself a bit reticent, but knowing Vi's work and how her mind keeps surprising, I went on and I'm very glad I did.

When Kings Rise focuses on a Secret Society/Cult, not a new concept by far, but the Hands of Kings comes with another level of reach and grandeur, managing in the pots of all major world institutions in a dense net of liasons, secret agendas and powerful players, kings to dethrone, kings to crown and Diarmud O'Sullivan and his three potential Brides as protagonists.

The three chosen women, groomed to be the future consort of a king, Diarmud O'Sullivan, was a refreshing and ingenious touch and manages, imo, into an interactive game with the readers, polling preferences and revealing backgrounds.

Selen, Niamh and Amira might have just two things in common, they come from families with a name, even a disgraced one, and they were chosen as potential brides for a king, but in all the rest, they couldn't be more apart, their motivations to 'agree'/ 'accept' to be in such position differ greatly, one more than the other two and the way each one of them faces such task is personal and comes with a plan or just to go along as things progress.

As the plot thickens and revelations sprout here and there, the audience along with the brides gathers the nature of the King, the persona, the man, his plans, his faults and what's at stake. At the same time, his traits of personality, intelligence, protectiveness and one eye always open to the surroundings, his admiration for the women, worry and honesty and a future decision to make, that proves more dificult than expected.

Suspicion, schematics, threats, a murder to solve, a loose-cannon coveting the forbidden and the master puppeteer on his six, Diarmud is on his own, trust is a luxury he can't afford, family, friends and foes might be one and the same. For now, he trusts just a bit in Selen and Niamh. Amira is lost with despair and in a perilous predicament and finding her will be pivotal for her sake and Diarmud's.

The narrative is a bit more paused than Vi got us used to and for me felt more like an introduction to this new world of the great Hands of Kings "a global cult with the ability to replace CEO's, Presidents, and Popes", a big chess with crucial figures, the moves, trumps and bargaining chips, a new Don to place, the chair and the power that comes with it. For Diarmud, some dragons to slay, one down, another to go and nobody knows how many more.

Moments of intimacy and shared secrets, truths and regrets put a tone down to all this seedy and conflicting atmosphere and showed Diarmud his potential brides might be the 'united' (tbd) front he needs to fulfill his strategy and coming out unscathed.

With the enough stinger to poke the audience and make it come back for more, this first act ends in strain and internal chaos with the aftermath coming in When Kings Bend, book #2 of the O'Sullivan Brides.
The future is incognito.

🅼🆈 🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆:

This book firstly pulled me on the blurb itself where it says our main lead takes three brides.
Now I'm used to mostly reading reverse harem romances and why choose for the female lead but it was a refreshing and spicy twist to read a Why Choose angle from the man's side and let me tell you this one was a spicy package of intrigue, mystery, action and drama.

Diarmuid is from an Irish Royalty family and is the Duke. He also belongs to a secret society that people don't even talk about in whispers and is just supposed to be a rumor, nobody knowing the truth about it all.

He gets to have three brides and is to select the one that feels right to him as his partner.
Each of his brides have their very own story which tells us why they are the way they are and especially their own side adds a different zing to this dark ride.

Amyra had me on the fence about her throughout because we see her being bitter and jealous and yet her familial situation had me feeling for the things that girl had to go through.
Yet, it's debatable but not acceptable the way she acts out.

Then there's Selene, the straightforward one, the one who grabs Diarmuid's attention right from the start and yet she sort of clashes with him too.

Then there's sweet Niamh who is shy and quiet and yet has a strength to her that only comes out to her close folks.

It's undoubtedly clear though that it will be tough for Diarmuid to choose one of them as he's ensnared by all of them as each of them are different in their own unique way and make Diarmuid feeling protective towards them.

The family Politics webs up into a Suspense ride which keeps us in the dark as to what's the end game that Diarmuid has in mind.
There's no denying his bitter and wounded past yet it remains to be seen why he's spinning the game the way he is.
Secrecy and master games are in play while every player is trying to one up the other.

There's also the wild card in the family, Wolf and he was scary for sure and also it's evident that he's a man who's not to be crossed because of his wild, animalistic nature and unapologetically being truly bad.

The spice scenes sprinkled throughout the book makes this ride one heck of a yummylicious one and I seriously loved the different povs and being in different stages with Diarmuid and one of them or all of them. Definitely high on spice. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🥵🥵🔥

And that ending... Wow... Misunderstandings and true natures coming out or were those just a result of clever manipulations of an evil mind... I so can't wait to find out in the next book. Loved this one.❤️❤️❤️

Amazing Story & Narration🎧 All Consuming & Leaves You Wanting More!

When Kings Rise
The O'Sullivan's Brides, Book One
By: Vi Carter
Narrated by: Scott Rose, Ava Flynn, Maeve York, Scarlett Rose McCloughan

Wow, what a great start to an amazing new series, a dark mafia romance like no other, a story that totally consumed me and I could not tear myself away from. Vi Carter’s writing, plotting and world building are absolutely fantastic, as are the character growth and development. For the first book of the series, she lays down the foundation and begins building on it preparing for what lies ahead. Diarmuid O’Sullivan’s family belongs to a powerful cult-like secret society, one his uncle ruled until his demise. The next generation of O’Sullivans will take his place and the leader, who remains behind scenes, chose Diarmuid to be the new Don, and his cousin is not happy about that. As the new Don Diarmuid will have to choose a wife and it is their tradition to present him with three potential brides, ones that were already chosen, contracts and agreements made with their families some years ago. Selene McNamara, Niamh Connolly, and Amira Reardon are the chosen ones and he must pick one to be his bride, but the three could not be more different from one another. I loved getting chapters from each girl told in their point of view and it was great to learn more about them, and how they are handling their situation and new relationship with Diarmuid. It was also great to learn more about Diarmuid, who is a complex character, so there is a lot more to come about him and the world he will rule. There is never a dull moment in this book and the multi-layered story has the perfect balance of drama, angst, some mystery, thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. Vi Carter, thank you for this amazing story and wild ride. I am looking forward to what comes next in this intriguing world you created.

🎧📚🎧 And for the amazing narration and the wonderfully talented voice actors, Scott Rose, Ava Flynn, Maeve York, and Scarlett Rose McCloughan, who were brilliant in their roles, giving each a voice that was fitting, accent and all. Their portrayal of the characters was spot on, grasping every aspect of their character’s personality and I loved how they took their roles and made them their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their performance elevates this already amazing story to another level. Thank you for this fabulous listen.

Diarmuid is a member of the organization, Hands of Kings. He is vying for the spot of don of his family, fighting to be a king in the organization and trying to select a bride from the three women presented to him. His world is dangerous, his background damaging, and his secrets will get people killed. The three women chosen for him as potential brides have all been trained their whole lives to be the wife of a don. Now he must navigate the dangerous waters of the mafia and protect the women given to him.

I like Diarmuid. He is not a good guy. He has killed and will certainly kill again in the future. The author made him human in a few different ways in the book and I really liked that. I’ll give an example, he was trained to be obedient and kill when he was just a child so his moral compass is skewed from those experiences. I like that he makes mistakes. Victor is a puppet master that controls Diarmuid’s actions. I am hoping that the author gives more information about him in the next installment. Diarmuid’s cousin is a loose cannon. He believes he should be the next don but Diarmuid doesn’t believe he would be a good choice. This causes a lot of tension.

The three women chosen as brides are very different from one another. Amira is committed to becoming the bride chosen by Diarmuid. She is often cruel and sometimes appears to be a little crazy. Niamh has demanding parents that are willing to use their daughter to gain a better position in society. Niamh is willing to be a bride in order to give her sister the freedom to choose her own future. Selene’s parents only had her because they were expected to produce a child and they see her as nothing more than a pawn. Selene is close with her grandparents. Niamh and Selene bond with each other. Their newfound friendship is a potential complication for Diarmuid since he must choose one bride in the end.
If you read this book you have to accept that the women are treated like objects in the world of Hands of Kings. Their value is in the connections they can make if they are chosen as a bride. It is degrading for the women. There are also some graphic adult activity scenes that are unsettling.

This is a contemporary mafia story set in Ireland. I hesitate to call this a romance since Diarmuid has three women to choose from as brides and this is book one of the story. There is a murder story subplot. This story has a cliffhanger ending.

WHEN KINGS RISE is the first instalment in Vi Carter’s contemporary, adult THE O’SULLIVAN BRIDES dark, erotic, romance series focusing on Irish Mafia King Diarmuid O'Sullivan, and his three virgin brides Selene, Naimh, and Amira.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there will be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from four first person perspectives (Diarmuid, Selene, Naimh, Amira) WHEN KINGS RISE follows in the wake of the murder of Diarmuid’s uncle Andrew O’Sullivan, and Diarmuid’s rise to ‘King’. The Kings is a cult-like organization with the ability to replace and control CEOs, Presidents and Popes, and Diarmuid’s time has come to take his place. Gifted with three virgin brides, Diarmuid is about to come face to face with his future, three woman as different as any three woman could be, but three women who could be the downfall of some powerful men. As the hunt for Andrew O’Sullivan intensifies, betrayal comes from within, taking aim at Diarmuid O’Sullivan.

The world building is detailed and complex. We are up close and personal with three woman who have been groomed to be a bride to a King but three women who are determined to take back control of their lives. Diarmuid O’Sullivan is much more than a King but a man with a need to control.

The relationship between Diarmuid and the three women is different on many levels: Amira who has suffered more then the others: Naimh is determined to protect her younger sister at all costs; and Selene wants to uncover the truth about Diarmuid and the Kings. Amira is determined to take everything and more, leaving the other women floundering for a post in Diarmuid’s world. The $ex scenes are provocative and aggressive.

There is a large ensemble cast of questionable and dark secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Diarmuid’s brothers Ronan and Lorcan, their embittered cousin Wolf; head of the Hand of Kings Victor Maddigan; investigative journalist Rian Morrissey; Niamh’s sister Ella, as well as the ’bride’s contemptuous parents.

WHEN KINGS RISE is a story of power and control, secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, murder and madness, family and relationships. The premise is dark, gritty, dramatic and intense; the characters are dangerous, powerful , determined and desperate. WHEN KINGS RISE ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

First off I’m a fan of Ms. Carter’s work.
After reading the blurb, I knew it was a must read for me.
I’ve read hundreds of books. And come across lots of different plots and storylines.
A vast and wide range of different plots.
But honestly I have never come across a story that was a mixture of mafia and cult. Plus three brides.
Once I started reading the book. I was pulled in right away. I just couldn’t stop reading.
I was so invested in the characters, the plot and the outcome.
Diarmuid had my interest piqued right off the bat. He has an air of mystery and intrigue to him.
He’s a complex character. So many layers to him. I’m excited to see and figure out more about him.
As each layer of him is revealed. To discover how and why he is the man he is today.
I really liked Selene and Niamh.
Selene is elegant with sophistication to her. She’s a giver and it’s in her nature to take care of others.
She’s a nurturer and kind. But that by no means, means she’s a pushover. Absolutely not.
Selene also has fire and spirit in her.
Niamh is like a naive innocent young lady. She’s tranquil and calm. But she’s easily made nervous and on edge. She doesn’t like to cause drama or make a scene. She’s someone you want to protect and take under your wing. Which is exactly what Selene does.
Now for Amira. Yea I really did not like her at all. I found her to be mean and ugly inside.
This might be an oxymoron but I did feel for her. I wanted to give her a hug. And wrap her up.
But to me her bitterness she overshadowed everything else for me.
The plot and storyline are intricate and complicated. Lots going on. Drama, suspense and backstabbing. Who to trust, who not to trust. Secrets and deception. Throughout parts of the story I was on the edge of my seat and a mess of nervousness.
And of course it’s sexy and steamy. Come on now one sexy man and three gorgeous women.
You know it’s going to be sizzling hot.
While all that is great. I appreciated that the author concentrated on giving the reader more insight into each character. That gave me a more detailed and more intimate look at each one as individuals.
Loved the complexity and intensity of the book as a whole. And exciting to reading the next book.

Secrets and Revenge

Vi Carter OSullivans Brides bk 01 When Kings Rise

This has a spin that I can't remember seeing in a romance before. We get Diarmuid O’Sullivan's POV as well as those of the potential brides he will choose from. I must say, he definitely knows how to start a party. The opening scene is... *where's my fan?* ... let's just say it is something!

Now to meet our "contestants" for Diarmuid to play with and test before choosing:

First is Selene "Troublemaker." She quickly gets a mark against her, earning her the moniker and reinforcing its fit along the way. Even so, I think she's the best match for Diarmuid.

Next is Amira Reardon. Life has dealt her a crap sandwich. She wants to be what Diarmuid needs in a bride to escape the place she calls home and the people in it. She falls victim to something many desperate people do, she becomes too eager to win her prize, causing her to take things too far.

I was initially rooting for her, but long before we got to the cliffhanger, I changed my tune. I do like Diarmuid's reaction when he realizes some of what she's been dealing with, but it may be too little, too late.

Lastly, we have Niamh Connolly. She seems to have an innocence about her that makes her likeable and her reasons for doing this aren't to find a husband. I am rooting for her to find an HEA but not necessarily with Diarmuid.

A lot of people see me as angelic and innocent, and I play that part so well. Maybe not well enough this time.
-- Amira Reardon

All in all, this dark and twisty start to the series was intriguing. The cliffhanger hits at a very interesting point, and I look forward to seeing what comes next.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. I followed along with the book for a little bit. The two don't completely match, so I dropped the book.

The narrators are Maeve York, Scarlett Rose McCloughan, Ava Flynn, and Scott Rose. Their Irish accents are fantastic!

This was my first audiobook from this author and I am on the fence about how I am feeling about it. I was confused a lot of the time and couldn't get into the story fully, which was sad because I feel like it has a lot of potential. I think for me the jumping with all the POVs as an audiobook was too much for me and that normally doesn't happen. I also haven't read anything from this author and assume there is a big world and I felt behind and couldn't keep up with all the families, connections, etc.

I think the overall plot was good, with the twists the author threw at the reader and the suspense with the kidnappings/scheming/murders/cover-ups. I was intrigued by the different personalities of the main characters and their backgrounds. I might try this again but reading the book instead and see if it sticks more. I normally can keep up with an intricate storyline/multiple characters (I listen to RH all the time) but the way it was delivered made me have to rewind a bunch because my brain couldn't retain the info. Probably a personal thing, but I just couldn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted based on the delivery.

Narration was ok, I have listened to some of these narrators before and enjoyed them, some are new to me. There wasn't anything that was bad per se, I would give the performances 3.5-4 (some were stronger than others). I think the quick chapter POVs just couldn't grip me like normal audiobooks can. It felt like 3 different books within one book. Nothing against the narrators, they did what they were supposed to do. I do think some of the accents didn't feel as genuine but I am not sure who spoke who in terms of the 3 main ladies.

I am gonna put this author on my list to check out in 2025, see if there is a different series to scope out and see if I like her writing. Maybe it was just this series and I need to switch it up. I never DNF unless it's something egregious. I know I won't like everything every authors writes so I need to give them different chances, I may just fall in love with a different book of theirs.

The plot centres around Diarmuid O'Sullivan, a dark, lethal man, the one who is sent to kill those who have stepped out of line or who threaten them. Then we have the Kings, I'm still not sure who they are, how they came into being or their purpose, but they have the ultimate power. Vincent is the one who appears to be at the helm of the Kings, but I'm sure there's a lot lot more hiding in the background that the author is not revealing just yet. It's clear that Vincent and the kings have plans for Diarmuid just not what those plans are.

Diarmuid, his two brothers and his cousin are vying to take over as head of the family, following the disappearance of his uncle. What they dont know is that Diarmuid is responsible for his uncles "permanant" removal as head of the family. Diarmuid is given three women by the kings, one will become the queen consort, but whilst he decides who they are all there for his pleasure.

Three more different women could be chosen than Selene, Niamh and Amira. All have thier reasons for wanting to become the Queen consort, none want to be one of the two left behind. Diarmuid doesn't take much time getting the measure of the three women, the dynamics behind that first meeting where electric. As you get to know each of these women, you will find yourself gravitating towards putting each one in pidgoen holes. I won't spoil it by telling you where I put them.

Whilst Diarmuid is getting to know his three brides, you see a side to him you probably didn't think exists. He really does care about all three women and won't let anyone touch or hurt them in anyway. The world of the mafia and the Kings doesn't just disappear, the elephant in the room, Diarmuid's uncle's death. Someone knows whats Diarmuid did and is toying with him, clearly aimed at taking him down. As events reach a cresendo we are left with an almighty cliffhanger leaving you needing the book in the series.

This is the first book in the “The O'Sullivan's Brides Series” and a brilliant read - I could not put it down! This dark romance book will captivate you from the first chapter - the story is full of intrigue, it is twisted in many places and morally grey in others. The story is all about power and control with the Don’s and the chosen King, Diarmuid, betrayal and vengeance from those who question his right to be King 👑 family and betrayal. Diarmuid must protect his chosen three virgin brides, Selene, Niamh and Amira, at all costs. I just love it - cannot wait for the next book in the series! I’m very happily hooked 😊

I did not want it to end! From page to page, chapter to chapter, I could not put it down - you will metaphorically be on the edge of your chair! Overall, I would highly recommend this book and you will not be disappointed 😊

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is a book that has a lot going on and I was so excited to get my hands on it. This is the first book in The O'Sullivan's Brides Series. There is the Mafia and a cult and some dark things in the book. You will want to heed the warnings in the beginning of the book. It will contain triggers for some readers.
Diarmuid O'Sullivan apparently needs to get married. He is the a man who should be in line for the Don position but he has two brothers and a really twisted cousin all vying for the position. Enter the Hands of Kings. Victor the head of this organization is very interested and has bit plans for Diarmuid. This organization is so powerful they are top secret and can crown a king or queen and dethrone them in the same breath. They replace CEO's, Presidents and Popes. They might be a cult but they are very powerful. Now, like I said there is a lot going on in this book. Then you have three potential brides. All virgins and all trained to be wives. Each of them beautiful but also they give him a run for his money. Selene is the troublemaker. Amira has a dark side to her bill being innocent at the same time. And finally we have Niamh who is athletic and loves the water. They are all very different as you can see. But they all peak his interest. I loved reading this book. It will keep you one your toes but it was really good. I loved that we got to know Diarmuid as the girls did. His plans his personality, his faults, and everything that is at stake for him. There are threats and murders, forbidden moments, the Mafia, a cult . You do not want to miss this book.

First of, WHEN KINGS RISE is not a standalone, but book 1 of a series, so be prepared for a major gliffy! It deals with mafia and a cult, a man to be KING, 3 brides to be chosen for wife(only one of them that is), polyamorous themed, MFFF scenes, provocative and aggresive smex scenes, hot hot smexy times, danger, betrayal, vegence, distrust, doubt, murder, power and control, secrets, lies, family and relationships...It's dark, intence and dramatic....Better read for triggers and if you are OK just dive in, it's a great read , but you will end with a lot questions(unanswered obviously).

The characters are complicated each one on a different level, strong in their own premises, dangerous, they have reasons for doing what they do and desperate. The brides are completely apposite and different in all aspects, with only common things that are from families with a name... Each was trained to be selected for the position of a king's wife, and they do it for their own reasons .Naimh wants to protect her younger sister at all costs, Selene wants to uncover the truth about Diarmuid and the Kings, and Amira is determined to take everything and even more...

I need to read book2 , bc I need answers to understand somethings and some why's....I love Vi Carter's book, they are as dark as I need them, intense and keep your interest from page one even if dealing with themes that are not you cup of tea( for me, it's a man with more than one woman bc I don't particularly like FF actions).

Diarmuid O’Sullivan is a hitman for the Hands of Kings, a global cult capable of replacing leaders the world over. As a King, three brides have been chosen for Diarmuid, but only one will become his wife.

Bride #1 - Niamh Connolly is sweet, docile, and smart.
Bride #2 - Amira Reardon is bold, brazen, and beautiful. She lives with an abusive alcoholic mother she will do anything to get away from. She’s both rude and condescending to the other brides.
Bride #3 - Selene McNamara is brilliant and beautiful.

When Diarmuid’s uncle is found in a shallow grave, the O’Sullivans must choose a new Don. His cousin, Wolf, is growing more unhinged by the day, seeking answers for who’s responsible for his father’s death. Diarmuid is the one who killed him, so he’s covering his tracks, trying to keep his cousin from going off the deep end, reeling in two of his brides who are playing Nancy Drew, and attempting to locate the third bride who seems to have vanished after a physical altercation with her alcoholic mother. This book ended on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait for book 2.

Typically, the audiobooks I’ve listened to have been alternating narrators for the hero and heroine of the book. This was my first audiobook with so many POVs represented, so it was quite difficult to keep each of the brides straight. I ended up taking notes to keep from confusing each bride’s story. However, once I was able to keep them straight, I thoroughly enjoyed having each bride’s POV. The narrators were fantastic!

When Kings Rise is Book 1 of the O'Sullivan's Brides. This story includes murder, suspense, action and romance. Diarmuid O'Sullivan is Hand of the Kings Assassin. He was an Irish Duke and assassin for the O'Sullivan Mafia. All future kings are provided with three chosen women, who have been groomed to be the consort of a king. Diarmuid has been given three women who are bride candidates. He will spend time with all of them and eventually choose one as his bride. All three women are beautiful and different. Amira, Selene and Niamh are the young ladies chosen for Diarmuid. Each one has a reason to be chosen as his bride. Since the death of Andrew O'Sullivan, Diarmuid should be next in line for the Don position. He also has two brothers and a cousin competing to become Don. This is a well-written Dark Mafia Romance, ending in a cliffhanger.

This was a hard book to write a review about as there is so much information and secondary stories that are interwoven together. I am a huge fan of Vi Carter, but this was such a "different story" that I'm just not sure what to say. Diarmuid O'Sullivan is an Irish Duke and the male lead in this story (there are other males that are also important to a degree) and he is also the assassin for his family's mafia. But, while they are a powerful family, there is the organization known as the Hand of Kings that seems to be in control of his family, Ireland and maybe the world. He is to be promoted to a King in the organization and has been given three brides: Amira, Selene and Niamh each of them groomed almost from birth to be a bride of a King. The stories of the three brides are somewhat confusing and I will confess that while I became infested in this story early on, I was desperate to understand what was actually happening and finally at the start of Chapter 25 things were becoming clearer. There is a cliffhanger that will (hopefully) be explained in the next book, When Kings Bend but I want to stress that however confusing (at least to me) you may find this book, it is DEFINITELY worth reading and I cannot wait to finish the series with the book 2.

The opening book in a new trilogy from Vi Carter that finds Diarmuid in the process of choosing a consort from three virgin brides. But he’s at the mercy of a powerful, global cult known as the Hands of Kings who not only hold power over choosing a new president or a leader of commerce but also have the ultimate decision of whether or not Diarmuid takes his deceased uncle’s role as Don of the O’Sullivan family over his cousin or brothers.

Diarmuid was an intriguing character with so many layers to him. He’s determined to take over his family, but he has secrets that could destroy his plans. I was a bit worried that there would be a bit of a Stepford vibe from the three prospective brides especially considering they have been raised for this sole purpose, but they all have distinct personalities and their own reason for participating in the selection. The overall story and concept is intriguing but I’m struggling with the idea of three heroines which is a bit of a double standard as reverse harem doesn’t bother me. Will I read the next book? Probably if only to find out which bride he’ll chose but right now I’m thinking Diarmuid is going to end up with his own permanent harem!

Whew!

This author consistently delivers dark and dangerous characters, in very unforgiving worlds. Kings are chosen, but that doesn't mean the chosen man is safe!

Diarmuid has lived a tortured life, raised as an assassin for this powerful cult of powerful men, with far-reaching powers. As part of his ascension, he is given 3 women, one who will be his wife. Amira, Selene, and Niamh all have reasons to want to be chosen, and reasons for wanting out of this arrangement.

The deception, backstabbing, viciousness of this world has everyone on edge. I enjoyed the connections between some of these characters, and worry about others!!
(I'm looking at you, Wolf!)

This story ends on a cliff hanger, fyi, so just be okay with that. It's a very entertaining story, with all the things we enjoy from this talented author.
I was fortunate to receive a complimentary copy of this book and I voluntarily leave my review.

Obviously I would like to read the next part of this story right now, to see how Diarmuid handles both the betrayals and the danger. It's going to be messy... and I can't wait!! :)

This is book 1 of a two book series I think and it's also my first book from Vi, and I was FREAKING HAPPY to start it a few days ago. This book was so sad on so many levels but the hardest part for me was and is the past of Diarmuid. It's just pure pain, and pure terror and I don't how my man survived. He's just so good in so many ways, he's trying to protect everybody that he loves around him and doesn't care if he needs to take care of something. I just love how Selene and him do everything they can to understand each other and how far they're willing to go for each other and how much they respect and understand each other. The emotions are everywhere and the writing is top tier. 😊

It's a beautiful story with beautiful characters. So thank you for this book and my lovely couple. ❤️

Ps my favorite quote!!!!

"The man before me is not just a protector. He is a survivor, carrying the weight of his past with every step, every decision marked by the trials he has endured. The revelation does not weaken my perception of him; rather, it deepens my respect and my understanding of the battles he has fought, those both visible and those hidden beneath the surface."

This is a unique dark mafia romance. Our MMC, Diarmuid, is a person in the Hand of the Kings and also a part of his own family mafia business. As part of the Hand of the Kings, you have three brides selected for you from higher ups to select one as your consort. The three brides, Amira, Niamh, and Selene, all have different personalities that help add to the story.
Throughout the novel are a few different storylines. One about who killed Diarmuid’s uncle, the relationships between the brides and Diarmuid and each other, and Diarmuid’s cousin Wolf and his shenanigans. The author does an excellent job interweaving and engaging readers with these storylines.
There are a few spicy scenes and they are very explicit. A few scenes involve pain, bondage, and multiple women.
The book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger and not on an HEA. So I am intrigued to see what happens in the next novel!
This would be a great novel for those that enjoy mafia romances, darker, morally grey characters, and darker romances!.
