boring plot – way too many characters – no character development
This book basically lists all characters from the Unicode Character Set on 500+ pages in tabular form. It is completely pointless and useless for a couple of reasons:
(1) The Unicode Character Set is not fixed. It gets expanded from time to time [for instance lately some “emoticons” were added], so you’ll only see the characters that were defined when the book was published.
(2) All the information from this book is readily available on a myriad of really good webpages [fileformat.info being my current favorite one].
(3) The text in the book is set in a proportional font including the tables, which makes them really hard to read:
(4) The font that was used for this book doesn’t include all Unicode characters [in fact no font does a.f.a.i.k.] so there are quite some characters displayed as “broken” or “N/A”:
If you want to learn about Unicode go somewhere else and stay away from this book!
