I've read this a few times - it's a book owned by my Mum and I have revisited it on a number of occasions when visiting the folks :-)
Elizabeth West writes with a straightforward good humour about the often amusing, but sometimes heart-breaking, world of being a Primary School secretary. The characters - children and adults alike - are described with kindness and conviction, without ever getting over-sentimental or political about what must be a difficult and complicated role. It's pretty light in places, and I can imagine it feeling a little 'so what?' to some readers, but I found it amusing and interesting as a non-parent.. which I guess is some kind of recommendation/credit to the book.
