As a yoga devotee, I liked this book, its beautiful photography and its clear depictions of various poses. Like all DK books, it illustrates its material with colorful, crisp, cut-out photos. The book contains a lot of inspirational quotes, a little bit of history, and easy-to-read instructions for performing all of the basic yoga moves. However, the text could have used a better copy editor, some research findings and a detailed bibliography to back up its somewhat more dubious assertions about yoga's benefits and contraindications.
This book is THE BOOK for anyone new to yoga. It doesn't just show you a pose, but gives step-by-step examples of how to get into the pose. It gives both the technical name and the laymen's name. For instance, the book tells us that Vrikasana is Tree Pose and that tree pose is a balancing pose. It tells us the benefits of the pose and who should refrain from doing the pose. Before you step foot in a yoga studio for the first time, do yourself a favor and buy or borrow this book.
