PACIFIC ODYSSEY: The Curious Journey of Lew 2.0

Rate this book
"A ROCKET RIDE! ‘Poltergeist’ meets ‘Wall Street’ in a remote Asian kingdom. Nonstop fun and exotic glitz as Lewis N. Clarke, a brilliant but shallow American businessman, becomes ‘Lew 2.0 in a Tropical Wonderland’. Don’t miss it!" -- James Roby, The UrbanKnights Series.

From the pen of bestselling author Chet Nairene comes PACIFIC ODYSSEY, a treat for fans of international adventure and travel fiction.

Doling out equal doses of humor, exotica, adventure and romance, this is the story of brilliant but shallow New York tech businessman, Lew Clarke, who gets in over his head versus dangerous Asian occult forces and, to save his company, is forced to journey to an odd hermit kingdom hidden deep within Southeast Asia.

Things soon escalate . . . all in the wrong direction! Once inside the Kingdom of Amazia, Lew finds his problems have only just begun. In this closed-off, mysterious but highly ethical universe, all his modern-day knowledge and expertise are essentially useless.

He attempts to navigate this unfathomable land, helped by exotic but charming characters, including Mr. Frog, Wongrat, Uncle Inpanh, Khun Khon and Boo. He goes on to discover the dark secret threatening all of Amazia and, while visiting the ultra-rural town of Biti, falls headlong for Boo’s stunning cousin, Miss Nong. His entire calculus shifts to encompass issues far greater issues than just saving himself.

PACIFIC ODYSSEY is a humorous, at times harrowing cautionary tale that pits modern Western values and tech against Eastern mysticism and the occult. Reading like a mash-up between Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities and the movie Poltergeist, this tale will resonate for fans of exotic travel writing (e.g., Paul Theroux, Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene), adventure and romance. And readers who enjoy business adventure nonfiction, like the many works of Michael Lewis, should also enjoy this story.

This is the latest offering from BANANA LEAF BOOKS, a custom imprint specializing in the humorous adventures of Westerners adrift in Asia. Also available from Chet Nairene is “PACIFIC DASH, From Asia Vagabond to Casino King”.

In many ways, he inspired me in life and now, as a writer. My goal is to utterly delight my readers, taking full advantage of the many astounding things I've witnessed during my long stay in Asia. I attempt to parachute my readers directly into alien experiences in those exotic lands and always keep the fascination level high. This was my first time reading this author and what a delightful find it was for me. Initially I had thought I wouldn’t be able to get into the main “businessman” character as I’ve never been a fan of that kind of storyline but I was completely off base in my concern. I found him and his adventures to be thoroughly entertaining and quite thought-provoking at times. Without giving away any spoilers, all I will say is that you will be charmed and engrossed and won’t be able to put the book down. Highly recommend it.

Thirty-six-year-old tech wizard, Lew Clarke is about to ascend to god-like status at the corporate behemoth he has worked for since leaving Harvard. Accolades, and more importantly to Lew, eye-watering levels of financial recompense are raining down on him. But when a minor, forgotten issue floats shockingly to the surface, Lew’s gold-plated, superficial existence implodes.

After licking his wounds, Lew embarks on a new business venture, importing highly intricate, bespoke wooden garden ornaments directly from the supplier, Lotus Creations, in the tiny kingdom of Amazia, Southeast Asia. Money and the good times roll abundantly again. Until a trickle of strange complaints becomes a deluge and Lew is left with no option but to seek out the mysterious retailer from the even more mysterious Amazia…

Pacific Odyssey definitely ranks as one of my favorite novels so far in 2024. I read Nairene’s earlier novel, Pacific Dash, last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, with Pacific Odyssey, Nairene has shifted up into fifth gear. It’s a highly imaginative and unusual book that I found almost impossible to put down.

From the opening couple of paragraphs, the novel instantly hooks the reader. Confident, breezy, and intriguing, it crackles with comic energy and is deceptively well-written. It would have been easy for Nairene’s depiction of Lew, and his employer, the corporate IT titan, Mega, to have fallen into stereotype.

And, while Nairene does tip the reader a knowing wink for some elements, it’s done with clever subtlety and wry, observational humor, a tone that continues throughout the novel.

The structure and ethos of Mega is not only horribly credible but incredibly well-conceived. When Lew is put out to pasture at Mega’s global call center in Weehawken, Nairene depicts the place with hellish accuracy.

Although the novel is relatively long, it’s fast-moving with wave after wave of itchy foreboding. None more so than when Lew discovers Lotus Creations. However, underneath the suspense and possible chicanery, a faint sub-textual and thought-provoking commentary emerges as Lew and best friend, Sal, navigate the differences between the East and West cultural mores.

These distinctions prove profound, although Nairene keeps the reader guessing about the Amazians. As the novel gathers pace, a compelling mystery begins to unfold at its heart.

Nonetheless, on the surface at least, Part Two also resembles the finest of travel memoirs, certainly reminiscent of Paul Theroux’s rail journeys. As Lew travels from the capital of Amazia, Ruangbang, up to Biti, a deeply rural backwater, it’s excellent stuff. Kafka-esque, funny, immensely authentic, and never becomes far-fetched even as the reader is hurtled into a surreal rabbit hole.

Lew encounters hurdle after hurdle until assistance appears in the form of Boo, an Amazian who speaks English. The advent of Boo changes the novel a touch, it becomes a little more serious, and also rather spiritual both in terms of the narrative and Lew’s trajectory.

This esoteric turn is enhanced by Nong, Boo’s cousin. She reminded me of Fiona Lo in Nairene’s previous book and, at times, seemed underdeveloped, although her enigmatic countenance and reason for it, form the basis of the narrative’s outcome.

Pacific Odyssey is richly descriptive, vivid, sensory, and full of whip-smart, nimble dialogue, especially between Lew and Sal, whose exchanges are warm and amusingly natural. All of Nairene’s characters from Harry at Mega to Wongrat at the Miracle Royal Pagoda Hotel are wonderfully convincing and step from the page.

Pacific Odyssey is a literary thrill ride. Darkly funny and thought-provoking, it’s written with consummate verve and captivating vibrancy that never fails to entertain. Highly recommended.

As an avid reader who relishes stories steeped in exotic locales and cultural immersion, Chet Nairene's Pacific Odyssey immediately captivated me. The novel's vibrant depiction of the fictional Southeast Asian kingdom of Amazia evokes the type of rich, immersive experience I crave, reminiscent of the travel writing of Paul Theroux.

The story follows the transformation of Lew Clarke, a successful but ethically-challenged New York tech executive whose gilded life comes crashing down. Seeking to rebuild his fortunes, Lew stumbles upon an opportunity to represent a peculiar Amazian company that crafts intricate wooden garden ornaments. What begins as a seemingly straightforward business venture soon spirals into a mind-bending odyssey as Lew finds himself drawn deeper into the mysterious island nation.

Nairene skillfully weaves together elements of corporate thriller, cultural travelogue, and hints of the supernatural, creating a wholly engrossing narrative. His intimate knowledge of Southeast Asia shines through in evocative descriptions that transport the reader, whether it's the bustling streets of the Amazian capital Ruangbang or the mystical beauty of the remote town of Biti. I felt as if I were accompanying Lew on his journey, my senses heightened by the vivid sights, sounds and smells Nairene conjures.

As Lew navigates the unfamiliar terrain, both literally and figuratively, he undergoes a profound personal transformation, shedding his one-dimensional pursuit of wealth and status. Nairene deftly explores themes of cross-cultural understanding, corporate ethics, and the true measure of success, all while maintaining a gripping, page-turning plot. The supporting cast of characters, from the enigmatic Boo to the ethereal Nong, add further depth and intrigue to Lew's odyssey.
Pacific Odyssey is a richly rewarding reading experience that will captivate fans of travel fiction, business thrillers, and stories of personal growth. Nairene's talent for worldbuilding and character development elevates this novel well above the typical genre fare.

I was enthralled from start to finish and highly recommend this book to readers seeking an exotic, thought-provoking adventure.

A Global Odyssey of Wit and Wonder

Chet Nairene’s Pacific Odyssey: The Curious Journey of Lew 2.0 masterfully sails through the choppy waters of cultural dissonance, weaving a story as darkly funny as it is profoundly thought-provoking. With a vivid setting, memorable characters, and a deft interplay of the modern and the mystical, it offers an irresistibly entertaining ride. Three words sum up the experience: whimsical, profound, adventurous.

The narrative resonates with the universal question of what defines progress and value, particularly when the Western fixation on technological advancement clashes with the deep-seated wisdom of an ancient Asian kingdom. This contrast feels especially timely in an era where globalism has erased some boundaries while creating new tensions. Nairene’s uncanny ability to juxtapose the frenetic pace of a Manhattan tech executive with the enigmatic traditions of Amazia captures the reader’s imagination while inviting deeper introspection.

At the heart of the tale is Lewis N. Clarke, a stereotypical modern businessman whose arrogance and unexamined values lead him into a surreal and increasingly perilous journey. What begins as a mission to save his company evolves into a far richer exploration of morality, human connection, and the limits of logic when faced with the inexplicable. The novel’s kaleidoscopic cast of characters, from the eccentric Mr. Frog to the alluring Miss Nong, serve as mirrors reflecting Lew’s growth—or lack thereof. The world of Amazia itself is a character, alive with vibrant customs and eerie supernatural undertones.

The book dazzles with its content, blending satire with earnest adventure. Nairene’s writing brims with intelligence and wry humor, moving seamlessly between laugh-out-loud moments and harrowing, reflective scenes. The prose is rich without being overwrought, pulling readers into a vividly imagined world that feels simultaneously surreal and authentic. Targeted at readers with a penchant for both comedy and introspection, this novel’s appeal lies in its uniqueness—a blend of Western satire, Eastern mysticism, and universal human folly. The meticulous editing ensures that the pacing never falters, with the plot’s twists and turns leading organically to a deeply satisfying conclusion.

Those who might not enjoy this book could include readers who prefer straightforward narratives devoid of philosophical subtext or who find satire that pokes at cultural paradigms uncomfortable. Conversely, those who adore Graham Greene’s intricate explorations of morality or Michael Lewis's sharp dissection of modern systems will find much to love here. Fans of novels like Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities or films like The Grand Budapest Hotel will also feel right at home.

Nairene’s Pacific Odyssey is more than a story; it’s an immersion in a world of paradoxes, where the bright light of Western rationalism is refracted through the prism of Eastern mystery. The novel's wit and insight make it both a compelling read and a meaningful commentary on the modern world’s blind spots. This book does for cultural and spiritual discovery what the best adventures do: it makes the familiar strange and the strange unforgettable. Like the protagonist’s journey, it leaves readers wiser, entertained, and craving more.

Reading this book reminded me of reading a John Grisham book. A man is proceeding through a well-planned life, when suddenly something way out of the ordinary happens. Then he must move bravely into an unknown world to try to get back what is lost. In the case of this book, the man is Lew. He’s just lost all he has worked for when suddenly the opportunity to get it all back and more comes to him. The opportunity seems too good to be true, so maybe it is. Lew ends up traveling to a foreign land, where he faces language and cultural barriers to find out who has cheated him and why. The book includes a somewhat paranormal aspect to it, but it’s far from a paranormal book. It read more like a mystery. And it had that Grisham feel I get when I’m not sure why I like the book so much, but I do, and I keep turning the pages. The biggest difference here was that the MC was a businessman instead of a lawyer. The writing is nearly flawless. I felt immersed and engaged. The characters are all realistic and interesting. The problems Lew faces kept the tension coming. Overall, I’d recommend this book to lovers of mystery.

Chet Nairene's "Pacific Odyssey" is an enchanting blend of business thriller, cultural exploration, and magical realism. The novel follows American tech executive Lew Clarke on a transformative journey to the fictional Southeast Asian kingdom of Amazia. What begins as a routine business trip evolves into a profound personal odyssey, challenging Lew's Western perspectives and values.

Nairene's vivid world-building brings Amazia to life, immersing readers in a lush, exotic setting where ancient traditions and supernatural forces coexist with modern business practices. The author skillfully weaves together corporate intrigue, romance, and mystical elements, creating a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

While some plot developments stretch credibility, the overall arc of Lew's character growth is satisfying and believable. Supporting characters add depth to the story, offering insights into Amazian culture and serving as catalysts for Lew's transformation.

"Pacific Odyssey" explores themes of cultural understanding, personal growth, and ethical business practices, all while providing an exciting and often surprising plot. Despite minor flaws, Nairene has crafted an engaging novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy fish-out-of-water stories, Asian-inspired fantasy, and tales of personal transformation. It's a unique and captivating read that transports the audience to a richly imagined world while prompting reflection on cultural differences and the true measures of success.

Pacific Odyssey is the story of two parallel journeys undertaken by the main character Lew Clarke — a geographical quest but also a journey of the soul.

The first part of the book focuses on introducing Lew, then a callow, ambitious cog in a huge machine. He sees nothing but monetary roses in his future — a continuation of his rapid scaling of the corporate ladder into the stratospheric heights of enormous financial rewards.

But nemesis is snapping at the heels of his hubris and he is suddenly cast down, a victim of the company’s formula for effective dismissal — exile to a call centre department in New Jersey during which he’s expected to find another job and quietly exit stage left, albeit with a generous severance package.

Lew sinks into resentment-fuelled torpor, spending much of his time mindlessly surfing the internet. In the course of roaming the web one day he comes across a business in Amazia, a tiny hermit kingdom in Southeast Asia, which is looking for a US representative for their products, beautifully constructed miniature temple lookalikes. Initially suspecting a scam, Lew becomes convinced by the scheme and ploughs most of his assets into it.

To say much more would risk spoilers, but essentially the reader follows Lew, and to a lesser extent his former colleague Sal, as their new venture becomes a roaring success. But again nemesis rears her head and the business hits a major, even existential, problem. Unable to make contact with the head office in Amazia, Lew realises that his only option is to go there in person. Which he does, with colourful and unexpected consequences.

The second half of the narrative ventures into the realm of the speculative, which is a genre I don’t normally read, but this angle is clear from blurb so it’s a fair cop. And by that time I’d been hooked so was sufficiently curious to continue nonetheless.

The book is cleverly plotted and there is an elegant denouement with all loose ends neatly tied up.

The one initial downside for me was the length of the first section introducing Lew, but as I moved through the rest of the book I realised that perhaps what seemed like overkill was necessary for the reader to get to know Lew 1.0 well enough to understand and welcome his transition to Lew 2.0.

Pacific Odyssey is an interesting exploration, through the eyes of the main character, of the darker side of capitalism. Lew sees lessons for the West and also for his younger, avaricious self.

Overall, this is a pacy, well-written thriller with an original premise.

Chet Nairene's Pacific Dash was my favorite book of 2023. So when I saw he released another book, Pacific Odyssey, I was immediately excited. And then when I started reading, I was bummed to see it didn't continue the tale of Dash (which was well contained itself anyways) and was written in 3rd person (I tend to love 1st person). The feeling faded fast as Nairene's great writing style continued in the different POV and I soon grew invested in Lew as a character.

This novel is a tale of personal change, bundled through an engaging tale of discovery with splashes of mystery and lots of adventure as Lew visits the fictional land of Amaza. Nairene does an AMAZing job creating a fun cast of characters, landscapes, and culture during the fish-out-of-water second act. Without giving away any spoilers, there is an interesting, supernatural twist that is both surprising, yet also fits as it had been bubbling in the background for most of the story.

After reading this story, I think many readers would want to visit Amaza, despite it's lack of modern amenities, the friendly culture is as inviting as this book.

For fans of (not limited to but especially): Adventure, Travel/Exploration, Light Mystery, Light Romance

A ridiculous tale gone sublime.

The idea that two highly skilled product managers BOTH go all in on the notion that some kookie 500$ ornamental bird houses will net them millions was a tough one for this reviewer to swallow. I never quite did, but Chet Nairene’s Pacific Odyssey/Lew 2. was such fun that I ended up closing my mouth and taking the ride as offered and a fun ride it was.
Lew Resa, divorced king of product development for a mythical ‘Wall Street’ firm loses his job through an error in judgement. After thrashing around in the company dungeon call center, he sees a picture of a beautifully built bird house online and decides that every large home and business in America is looking for just such a product to display in the yard or at the office. Turns out he is right. The millions pour in until bad things begin to happen to the purchasers of these birdhouses. Because they are not houses built for birds, but for spirits of the dead and these ghosty folks are not happy when they’re jungle homes are ripped from the dark rich soil of a magical land called Amazia and sent to guard Mr. Rogers neighborhood down the street.
No more reveals here. Mr. Nairene is one of those cool writers who constantly look for ways to surprise the reader. Every time you think you have the story pegged, oops, there he goes in a new direction and not simply for the sake of surprise but because the move adds weight and drama to the story. That is the key so few of us get.
Enjoy this shifty tale. It’s a five star journey to a place we’ve never been before.

In Pacific Odyssey: the Curious Journey of Lew 2.0 by Chet Nairene, a NYC businessman is sent on an epic journey to the mythical SE Asian kingdom of Amazia where his Wall Street smarts and riches get him nowhere. Nairene introduces the reader to the odd people and customs in Amazia as Lew Clarke seeks to recover his crumbling business. The title thew me off. I thought I was joining a series in Book 2, but the story is about how Lew adventures cause him to reexamine his most ardently held beliefs about business and people. How does Amazia help a proto-typical modern-day western capitalist change his stripes?
Nairene blends a bit of fantasy/magic with compelling narrative and characters to tell the story. If I squint a little, I could see a movie based on the book and the characters geared for a young audience. Good storytelling, good writing and make this a five-star story.

This book is truly fantastic! The author's writing style keeps you engaged and interested throughout the entire story. The plot moves at a good pace, never dragging on or moving too fast. The genres are blended perfectly, with a mixture of humor, fantasy, and a little bit of romance. There are many surprising twists and turns that make it difficult to put the book down once you start reading it. The main character is likable, along with the side characters, such as Mr. Frog and Miss Nong. The challenges the main character faces also teach a valuable lesson about relying on technology for everything, especially in today's generation. There are also themes of self-discovery and perseverance in this book, which makes it both motivating and inspiring for readers of all ages. I would highly recommend this to anybody looking for an easy, enjoyable, yet thought-provoking read. Definitely worth the 5 stars!

Chet Nairene masterfully crafts a storyline that is as much about physical exploration as it is about an introspective quest. Lew’s journey aboard a small sailing vessel is filled with challenges and revelations that test his limits and expand his understanding of the world and himself. The detailed descriptions of the settings and the nautical adventures are vivid and captivating, placing readers right alongside Lew in his encounters with the vastness and unpredictability of the ocean.
What makes this novel stand out is its deep philosophical undertones. Nairene weaves complex themes of identity, existence, and resilience into the fabric of the narrative, prompting readers to ponder their own life journeys. Lew’s transformation from an ordinary individual into a seasoned sailor metaphorically mirrors his internal growth, making his character relatable and his experiences impactful.

The book also excels in its character development. Lew is a well-rounded protagonist, whose vulnerabilities and strengths are portrayed with nuance and empathy. Supporting characters, though less prominent, play crucial roles in Lew’s journey, enriching the story with their diverse perspectives and interactions.

Overall, "PACIFIC ODYSSEY: The Curious Journey of Lew 2.0" is a compelling read that offers a unique combination of adventure and philosophical exploration. It’s a story that will appeal to readers looking for depth and meaning in their literary voyages, making it a rewarding experience for those who undertake the journey with Lew.

Anybody and everybody should give this book a shot as I think it has a great storyline and it was a very fun read in my opinion.

The way the author described the settings was fantastic, transporting me to a world full of excitement and wonder. I loved how the book balanced action, humor, and introspection, making it really hard to put down. The mix of adventure, romance, and some wild paranormal twists kept things interesting and different. One of the best parts for me was how inspiring the story was. Lee’s transformation from a high-flying executive to a more grounded and self-aware person was really motivating. The author’s descriptions of the jungle and local culture were so vivid and realistic, adding a lot of depth to the story. Even though some of the paranormal stuff was a bit over-the-top, it made the book even more fun. If you’re looking for a thrilling, thoughtful read with plenty of humor, romance, and an inspiring message, I highly recommend *Pacific Odyssey*. It’s a unique and enjoyable journey that I think many readers will love.

Chet Nairene's Pacific Odyssey: The Curious Journey of Lew 2.0 is a delightful blend of adventure, comedy, and cultural exploration. The novel follows the misadventures of Lewis N. Clarke, a quintessential American businessman, as he's thrust into the enigmatic world of Southeast Asia.
Nairene’s portrayal of the fish-out-of-water protagonist is both humorous and insightful. Lew 2.0, as he’s dubbed, is a character we can both laugh at and empathize with as he grapples with the stark contrasts between his Western worldview and the ancient traditions of the East. The author's keen eye for detail brings the exotic locales to life, immersing readers in a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and flavors.

The novel's comedic timing is impeccable. Nairene's wit shines through as Lew navigates a series of absurd situations, creating a laugh-out-loud experience for readers. However, beneath the surface of the comedy lies a more intriguing plot involving ancient secrets, mysterious forces, and a dash of romance. This skillful balance keeps readers engaged and entertained throughout.

Pacific Odyssey is a captivating read that combines humor, adventure, and cultural exploration into a delightful package. Chet Nairene's writing is engaging and his characters are memorable. Whether you're a fan of travelogues, comedies, or simply looking for an escape, this book is sure to entertain.

"Pacific Odyssey" by Chet Nairene mix satire, romance, fantasy and mystery seamlessly, making it ideal for a wide range of readers. It tells the story of Lew Clarke, a self centered businessman from New York who is forced to travel to the kingdom of Amazia (a land rich in culture and mysticism) and, over time, changes from an arrogant and selfish person to a more empathetic person.

I liked how it explores the tensions between Western technological progress and Eastern traditions, offering a timely commentary on globalism. The narrative transports readers not only to the amazing kingdom of Amazia, but also to each location and allows the reader to live an immersive experience.

The novel's vibrant prose, unique setting, and blend of satire with emotional moments guarantee a rewarding reading experience, so I recommend this book if you are looking for a story of personal growth with a distinct essence.

I loved this book; I found it even better than Pacific Dash, which I also liked. The author speaks from experience. I found Amazia a thoroughly believable country, in spite of its name, and though the death of the bad guys was kind of a stretch, I'd give it a pass just because the whole rest of it was so entertaining. Good story, well-written, believable and interesting characters, and best of a wild trip back up into the remote ends of the earth, in the service of the redemption of a corrupt western soul. I recommend it!

This book is an absolutely MUST READ! I read the writer's first book in this series and was like, who is this guy???? The writing is so fantastic he much be a professional writer, right? It turns out he is a former journalist, and that makes sense because his writing is some of the best I have read this year. His characters are so real and I challenge you to start this book, read for maybe 10 minutes, and then put it down and go do something else. Good luck with whatever your "something else" was because you'll be spending the rest of the day reading this book! It's nearly impossible to put down - the entire first chapter creates a palatable what's going to happen feeling and then...bam! What happens is definitely not like what you thought! And the book is OFF! I don't want to give away plot details, but I will say that I think everyone will find something in common with the main character - being in a job that maybe doesn't fit anymore for a variety of reasons and needing (and wanting) to make the best of the situation (and boy does he ever!) I want the writer to hurry up and write more books in this series ASAP! 5 stars!

This is the second book I’ve read by Chet Nairene. This one has many of the same themes as the first: the exploration of Asian culture, the clash between western and Asian culture, and the intricacies and amorality of big business. It starts with a bang, with the main character suddenly finding himself out of the business mainstream, takes a couple of interesting turns, and ends up with an enticing story. I particularly loved the culture interactions. They were clearly and sensitively handled. Often, when I read indie authors, I find myself hitching on poorly worded phrases or a jerky flow to the plot. This doesn’t happen when I read Chet. His style is so smooth, I can immerse myself in the book and not worry about tripping over inadequate writing. There were one or two points when my skepticism meter flicked and I found myself giving my head a mental shake, but the story is so entertaining, I immediately moved on and enjoyed the story. If you’d like a good read and enjoy culture, I recommend this book.

"Pacific Odyssey–The Curious Journey of Lew 2.0" is a novel that promises a blend of intrigue and humour, set against the backdrop of Southeast Asia.
The protagonist, Lew Clarke, is a New York tech wizard whose DFAed at the height of his career. Expecting a raise, he is without cogent reasons demoted to a smaller division within Mega. Soon depression and feeling of loss gripped him and he answered an advertisement at the bottom of a newspaper. Looking for something other than the slump he was in, the advert pushed all the right buttons.
With a promise to an exotic destination to an unknown land, he jumped at the chance and Amazia was true to its words: it was a seductive chaos. Especially when his experience turned to unfortunate dismiss as his customers begin to suffer from mysterious accidents, rumours swirl, and Lew is compelled to unravel the truth.
The journey is not just a physical one but also an emotional odyssey as he navigates cultural clashes, makes new friends, and finds love.
The plotline offers a quirky mix of 'Poltergeist meets Wall Street,' with a touch of the exotic. It's a tale of modern challenges in a remote world, where Western knowledge is tested, and survival takes on a new meaning.
A must read for readers looking for something different while exploring this new kingdom.

fun, exciting, and new

"Pacific Odyssey" by Chet Nairene is a quirky, entertaining mix of humor, fantasy, and business drama. It follows Lew Clarke, a tech businessman who finds himself out of his depth in a strange Southeast Asian kingdom called Amazia. The culture clash and supernatural twists make for a fun and unpredictable read. Lew is a likable character, even though he makes some questionable decisions along the way (seriously, who invests without a contract?). The writing is sharp and witty, and the quirky side characters, like Mr. Frog and Boo, add charm. The story does stretch believability at times, and some parts feel a little too drawn out, but overall it’s an engaging ride. If you like stories that blend real-world issues with a dash of mysticism and humor, this one's for you. It’s a unique adventure that stands out from the usual crowd.

This is an almost Indiana-Jones-style adventure about a big-shot, white-collar executive from America who, after getting the boot from his high position in a Fortune 500 company (through no fault of his own), falls upon an entrepreneurial opportunity involving a small, obscure, and fictional Asian country called Amazia. Although his new business initially flourishes, he is suddenly hit by catastrophes stemming from vengeful local spirits that force him to go to Amazia himself. The author's portrayal of the city man getting lost and culturally shocked in such a backwater country is very realistic, vivid, and funny, ranging from his travails with the train's toilet to the inconvenience of having his belongings stolen by a troop of monkeys! There's even a romance with a beautiful local, his dealings with what amounts to a mafia lord, and his saving of an entire culture from slavery. This is a great, escapist book with a happy ending. I can see it being turned into a movie!

This tale follows a ruthless and materialistic Lew on a journey of self-awareness and discovery of the meaning of happiness. His personal trials and subsequent experiences in a far-away land lead to his new awareness of the power of the supernatural and importance of intention in the modern world.

Although a bit predictable at times, there were enough swerves and surprises that held my interest. This, along with a delightfully complex cast of characters and exotic scenery made this a very enjoyable and fast read.

As hinted at in the title, Lew 2.0 is a much better version of the Lew who was introduced in the opening, hopefully he is able to stay that way.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

PACIFIC ODYSSEY: The Curious Journey of Lew 2.0 by Chet Nairene is more than just a good read. It is a journey rich with paradoxes, compelling narratives and realistic characters. Whatever genre you read, this book crosses most and offers something for everyone.

The protagonist is Lew Clarke who becomes entangled in a web or intrigue when he tries to save his business by delving into a strange Asian land called Kingdom or Amazia. Once a shallow and unlikeable character, Lew’s adventures force him to realize there is more to life than himself and that he must confront issues that are so much more pressing.

Well written, this tale encapsulates the essence of what it means to be a successful businessperson in the Western culture, turns it all on its head and delivers a richly woven story that is charming and intriguing at the same time.

A few aspects that will certainly win readers over are the dry, but clever wit, the in-depth portrayal of the characters, especially those from the East, and flawless intersection of both reality and fantasy. But there is a whole lot more to explore.

Definitely worth reading, you won’t be disappointed in this enthralling book.

I came into Pacific Odyssey expecting a light romp through culture clash—and that's exactly what I got, with some unexpected emotional depth. Lew Clarke is a classic Silicon Valley success story: Harvard-educated, celebrated at a corporate monolith called Mega Brands… until he crashes spectacularly. What follows is an impulsive pivot into importing handcrafted garden ornaments from a tiny country called Amazia—and then the nightmare begins: American buyers start experiencing bizarre, even dangerous, accidents.

This book hooked me from the first page. The narrative zips along: it’s witty, peppered with smart, observational humor (think Poltergeist meets Wall Street) . I found myself laughing, then suddenly leaning in as the tone shifted—something uncanny, even spiritual, starts to emerge.

The culture clash is a riot. Lew's ultra-Western mindset is charmingly tested—his bravado unravels as he bumps up against Amazia’s strange, traditional world .

The setting and side characters are vivid—there’s a warm travel memoir vibe as Lew journeys from Ruangbang’s capital to spooky, off-the-grid Biti. It felt almost Paul Theroux–like in spirit

There’s a mild dip when the supernatural subplot comes in. Lew’s spiritual awakening and Miss Nong’s arc are compelling, but I wanted a bit more clarity or depth in her character development

The book is longer than it needs to be. It's pacey, sure, but some scenes felt like extra padding. That said, I didn't resent the length; it's an immersive ride.

If you love quirky international thrillers laced with humor, a touch of corporate satire, and a hint of the occult, this is a great pick. It’s fun, introspective, and genuinely unpredictable. Pacific Odyssey doesn’t try to be a heavyweight novel—but it leaves you with a smile, a few chills, and a lingering curiosity about what Lew—and Amazia—will do next.

I love books that take you on sci-fi adventures, and this one is no exception. In today’s world, where war and chaos are everywhere, sometimes you just need a book like this to escape into a completely different reality.
What really stood out to me in Pacific Odyssey was the way the story pulls you in. The world-building is vivid, the characters feel real, and the sense of adventure keeps you hooked from start to finish. It’s the kind of book that makes you forget about time, as if you’re right there alongside Lew, experiencing every twist and turn.
I also appreciated the deeper themes woven into the narrative. Beneath the thrilling journey, there’s a sense of discovery—not just of the world but of oneself. It makes you reflect on life, choices, and the unknown possibilities that lie ahead.
I wish you all to find a place in your imagination where you will feel warm and comfortable.
Huge thanks to the author for this journey of imagination!

Satisfactory in the End

Pacific Odyssey The Curious Journey of Lee 2.0 By Chet Nairene

After a somewhat slow start, this enthralling novel ultimately proves to be a worthwhile read. Chet’s vivid descriptions of the fictional Amazia region pique my curiosity, leaving me eager to learn more about this intriguing setting and its unique cultural traditions.

While the initial chapters may feel a bit disjointed, the narrative soon finds its footing, drawing you into the high-stakes personal drama unfolding for the protagonist, Lew Clarke. Chet skillfully weaves together themes of corporate ambition, personal transformation, and the universal search for meaning and connection.

By the book's climactic end, I was fully invested in Lew's journey as if I too had a stake in the company. Despite a slow start, the author's evocative world building and compelling character development ultimately makes this a rewarding reading experience. There is much to appreciate for both fans and new readers alike.

Pacific Odyssey is the tale of Lew, rising star of a multi-national tech behemoth. He goes from being a VIP to a FIP (‘formerly important person’) overnight. In the depths of his despair, a golden business opportunity presents itself, but is it too good to be true?
From the concrete jungle of New York to an actual jungle in Asia (complete with bandit monkeys and vengeful spirits), Lew undergoes a transformation and finds love and purpose.
Parts of this fable-cum-adventure are laugh-out-loud funny. It is a well-written story with a unique premise. Each sentence is lavishly detailed and the dialogue sparkles.
I even learned a new word – picayune.

Pacific Odyssey captivates the reader from the first page with its incisive humour, gripping narrative, and likeable lead character. Lew Clarke, a smart but conceited IT executive, appears to have it all until his professional rise is dramatically derailed by a long-standing problem. Lew embarks on a voyage of self-discovery that transports him from the competitive world of Silicon Valley to the mysterious and exotic country of Amazia, where a profitable new business venture in handcrafted garden ornaments swiftly devolves into anarchy. I was excited to see where Nairene's storytelling would lead me after reading her first book, Pacific Dash. Pacific Odyssey is unquestionably a step up in ambition and execution, even though Pacific Dash was a fun read. An enticing energy permeates the story, which skilfully combines humour, satire, and adventure. Despite his deep flaws, intelligence, and ambition, Lew Clarke is an intriguing guy. Nairene creates him with complexity, avoiding the cliché of the one-dimensional corporate shark and letting us see how he changes when he encounters hardship. Lew's trip is made more complex and intriguing by the equally well-drawn supporting cast, which includes the mysterious merchants of Amazia and the anonymous masters of Mega. The world-building in the book is one of its strongest points. Mega, the corporate behemoth Lew once worked for, is portrayed as frighteningly real; its soul-crushing efficiency and bureaucratic absurdities are both disturbingly familiar and darkly humorous. Amazia, on the other hand, is depicted with equal vividness, veiled in mystery but brimming with rich detail that brings the scene to life. Pacific Odyssey moves at a perfect tempo. The reader is kept interested without ever feeling hurried by the plot's meticulous development. Sharp, frequently nuanced, and consistently successful, the humour elevates the book without detracting from its more sombre topics. One small criticism is that some story points are too unbelievable, but in a book that feeds on satire and adventure, this feels more like a strength than a weakness. All things considered, Pacific Odyssey is a brilliant, unique, and utterly delightful book. This book appeals to readers who enjoy character-driven fiction, business satire, or global intrigue. I highly suggest this book to anyone searching for a humorous, action-packed escape because Nairene has truly excelled herself.
