The Basics: Database and Tools
This is part 1 of a series of quick learning guides for Oracle designers, developers and managers. Part 1 introduces completely new entrants to the Oracle environment about Relational principles and history, the background of Oracle, the products, database architecture, installation, Oracle and 3rd party database and design tools and provides a glossary of basic Oracle terminology and simple explanations of their meaning.
These guides are designed to rapidly deliver key information about Oracle to the following audience groups:
- Project Managers, Team Leaders, and Testers who are new to Oracle and need rapid access to strategic information about the Oracle development environment.
- Business Analysts, Designers and Software developers who are new to Oracle and need to make a first step in gaining a detailed understanding of the design and development issues involved in Oracle.

I'd have given this 3.5 (if that was an option) though in fairness it does cover what it set out to do: an Oracle Basic Guide, and as a support analyst there is a huge amount the author knows that I don't nor will ever need to know. The few diagrams and tables were good, and the parts where there was a lot of text such as Chapter 3 on how relational databases impact software development could have used more. I'm not a fan of bullet point lists, where these expanded with more description such as Chapter 4 on basic description of Oracle Products worked better. Finding Entity-Relationship diagrams on the Oracle version I use at work is not easy, eTRM has so much obsolete information so more expanded last chapter on Other sources would have helped too.
