An important topic, yes, and not a badly written book. The reason I'm knocking it down from four stars to three is probably not fair, but the fact is, it's largely obsolete by now and thus, no longer very relevant. So much has happened since the book was published and so many other books have come out since then, up to the present, that for this book to remain remotely relevant, it would need a new printing with some additional work added to reflect the changes and the present geopolitical world as it now stands. Thus, not bad, but generally not recommended.

"[Taiwan:] is the most credible possible cause of war between the twenty-first century's two great superpowers."

A highly readable account of manageable length that describes China's threat to Taiwan as of 2007. The threat situations it describes are not unique to Taiwan under a particular administration, although its publication date prior to President Ma's election and thawing relations between China and Taiwan since then does preclude an assessment based on 2010 conditions. Nonetheless, it's an interesting and quick read penned by a pair of defense experts from the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., one of whom has decades of experience working China - Taiwan issues for the US government. I would be interested to hear what these authors would have to say about the security implications of the pending economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) that will in all likelihood be signed between China and Taiwan quite soon.

The book views lots of datas and also events that escalate the tension between China, Taiwan and the US itself. However, the book shows too much tactics about the simulated war between China and US, which is quiet unrealistic. If such an event happened, it would be dubious for the starter to do so because of violation of treaties and solitary in terms of economy and support. Moreover, the scale of which isn't only in 3 countries but global scale instead. As the result, the World War 3 arise like Notradamus's prophecy " 21 century is the end of mankind".
