Nagaru Tanigawa is a graduate of the Kwansei Gakuin University School of Law. In 2003, he won Kadokawa's Grand Prize for Literary World for his work on the Haruhi Suzumiya series.
Wow I am surprised by how packed this anthology is and for the most part almost 80% of the stories are actually kinda fun.
I expected mostly duds with a few fun ones here and there but this was a mostly great celebration of these characters. I do have to say the stories did over rely on making Haruhi jealous or upset with Kyon which resulted in a closed space punchline but otherwise it still made me chuckle. There are a few uncomfortable ones that treat Mikuru poorly and clearly don't understand Tanigawa's original intentions with this character. Her poor treatment form Haruhi is not meant to be played for a gag but is actually an insight into the entitlement of Haruhi, it's a bad thing. Otherwise the other stories make up for this.
A few favourites include:
This world of ours - The Kyon ponytail gag is still gold and this short was surprisingly wholesome
The Alien Asakuras spirit of infinite challenge - Asakura is the best villain and this short about Nagato breaking her ego was hilarious
The man from beneath the ground - Mole man is such a hilariously stupid concept I love him
The Heroes of Haruhi Suzumiya - This story wasn't that interesting I just wanna shout out Koizumi's over dramatic Jojo pose💀
Change up - I enjoyed the Kyon and Koizumi body swap in the previous anthology and somehow the Asahina and Nagato one was even better
The Delusions of Haruhi Suzumiya - This is a funny what if scenario from that scene in Sigh where Haruhi and Kyon make up. Except here Haruhi's deep seated affection for Kyon makes her follow the whims of his desires against her better judgement
Don't push the key - A really fascinating background story about the Computer president as he ponders over Haruhi's infatuation over the ordinary Kyon. Tying this story up with Disappearance makes me want this to be canon
The Ramble of Haruhi Suzumiya - WAIT?! Did Tanigawa just used this short as the basis for the opening short story from Intuition?? He's allowed to just do that? 😂
Haruhi's operation: Music Video - Ending the book on a short about the makings of of the Haruhi Anime ending is GENIUS. Love how it somewhat suggests the closed spaces really are just Haruhi herself causing that havoc.
