Once Britain's leading bank, this is the inside story of the decline of Barclays. Weyer worked for them for 11 years and was responsible for setting up several overseas operations. He focuses on the personalities of the Barclays story but set in a wider context of economic and social change.
A good look at Barclays Bank from an insider/outsider's perspective. At the time I read this Barclays were not receiving good press, so some of the history of the bank is quite surprising (some of the more questionable aspects of the bank's history are also laid out).
Martin Vander Weyer writes well, keeps most of his personal interest to one side, and explains the business side of things (how Barclays Capital works, for example) well for someone like me whose only knowledge comes from the business pages of the newspapers.
