Sports Romance Best Friend’s Brother Marriage of Convenience Surprise Pregnancy Curvy FMC Secret Relationship Forced Proximity Second Chance
RIPLEY I’ve loved my best friend’s brother from the shadows since I was a kid…until I grew up and he finally noticed me. I promised him all my firsts and that’s what I gave him.
We both moved on but ended up in the same city years later, with him playing professional baseball and me playing professional softball.
I was in a huge bind and he helped me…by marrying me.
It was our secret…until I messed things up.
QUINCY I vowed never to get married and have kids…until my sister’s sexy best friend needed help.
It wasn’t all bad. A no-strings-attached marriage. A secret relationship.
But she caught feelings, so I did the only thing I could…I walked away.
Years later she’s back in my life. The heat hasn’t simmered, but I still can’t give her what she wants. Can I?
I’m starting to wonder if I want more…until she drops a bomb on me.
Known as the queen of RaunchCom, AK Landow is a spicy RomCom author. She’s a recovering attorney living outside of the Philadelphia area with her husband, who she secretly pined for through her teen years, three crazy daughters, and multiple animals.
She enjoys reading, now writing, drinking copious amounts of vodka, and laughing. Having discovered there’s no other need in the world for funny perverts, she’s thrilled to have this new avenue to channel her age-inappropriate sense of humor.
She began her publishing journey with the City of Sisterly Love series, initially writing the first book, Knight, because it pisses her off that there are so few FMCs over the age of 40. She wrote it as an FU to the romance community to let them know that "oldies" still get it on. She fell so madly in love with both being an author and her fictitious family, that she can't seem to stop writing.
The entire series centers around a group of strong, intelligent, confident, and supportive women. The central family is known for severe cases of oversharing and walking in on each other. Hilarity often ensues.
The Belles of Broad Street series debuted in 2023 with Conflicting Ventures. Indecent Ventures and Unexpected Ventures followed shortly thereafter. The final book in the series, Enchanted Ventures, came out in early 2024. It world shares with the City of Sisterly Love series, but can be read as standalones.
2024 also became the year AK entered the sports romance world. Staying true to her goals of portraying strong women, her debut sports romance novel, Double Play, is both a baseball AND softball romance. It's the first in the Extra Innings series, which is now complete with four full-length novels and a prequel novella.
In 2025, AK is looking forward to diving into the world of women's basketball and men's football. The first book in the Fourth Quarter Fever series will be Home Town Advantage, coming on September 4, 2025.
Her writing is known for laughs, tears, and being one-handed reads.
Let me stand up, because I need to give this book a standing ovation. Ten million stars for Ripley, Quincy and AK Landow.
AK, you dug so ducking deep on this one! You really, REALLY, went above and beyond when it came to Ripley and Quincy’s story. I already had an inkling in my mind’s eye from book #1 that there would be something big here, that these two characters and their story would be important, but honestly? I never in my wildest dreams could have imagined that it would be soooo ahhh-maaaa-zing!!!!
This is hands-down AK Landow’s BEST BOOK to date!!!
Let me repeat: Best. Book. To. Date.
Period.
End of story…. well, not quite, but you get what I mean.
This story is so incredibly SPECIAL! It is raw. It is honest. It is hard. It is beautiful. It is lovely. It is fierce. It is sexy. It is funny. It is sensual. It is smart. It is frustrating. It is witty. It is flawed (the characters, that is, just as humans are). It is real. It is life-altering.
As I began reading this story, it quickly became apparent how it made me FEEL. I felt different reading this. Now, full disclosure: I have read every single AK Landow book. Some I love more than others, some characters I obsess over more than others, but all have struck a chord with me for various reasons. On the surface one might view AK’s books as quippy rom-coms that are full of amazing humor and a tremendous amount of sex and sometimes are a bit raunchy (don’t lie to yourselves, we are all there for it! We love AK for it). But her books are SO MUCH MORE!!! AK digs so incredibly deep into the human psyche, and into the inner most delicate parts of her character’s souls. She shows the flaws! She shows us the good, the bad, the ugly, and beautiful. And I so love her for it, because she makes these characters so vulnerable - and that makes them relatable! It’s a staunch reminder that everyone has issues and no one is perfect. We all have challenges and life is sometimes so incredibly unfair. But these are of course HEA books, so even though AK brings us on a journey sometimes of deep darkness and struggle, she leads us by the hand through the darkness before she bathes us in the light. And that my friends, is also her magic. Because she reminds us that despite all of the hard $hit, that we can all overcome. We can all succeed and fulfill our dreams. It may feel like a monumental task at times and just something that can’t be attained, but I’m sorry but some of AK’s characters have been through it! I know they are fictional characters, but I also know plenty of people who have lived snippets of each of these characters’ lives - so this is all relatable and believable. And we too can overcome.
And my whole rant here above is a poignant point in this second book of “Extra Innings” series, in that it ALL applies to Ripley and Quincy’s story. Their story takes us through half a lifetime’s journey of growing up and all that that entails mixed with how childhood upbringings, trauma, and challenges can shape our adult lives and the decisions we make. But despite their respective challenges, these two characters are so amazing and beautiful - and STRONG! Ripley, for example, is one of the strongest MFC characters that AK has written IMHO. Despite a lifetime of body image issues and having even been criticized in the public eye for her full-figure shape, how she takes her power back… I can’t but tip my hat to AK for how she wrote Ripley in regards to this. And that’s just one example of many!
How AK has written these two characters, their challenges and wins, as well as their joined love story… let’s just say that after finishing this story that I almost fell into a bit of depression for the fact that their story was over. This story is just so special that it moves you in the depths of your soul. So, let me stand again, and give “Curveball”, AK, Quincy and Ripley another round of applause. Ten billion stars. This book is going to live rent-free in my heart and soul for a long, long time.
Oh, and AK? Fell free add a game of “just the tip” to your future books.
PS Update 2-weeks-post-reading “Curveball”: This book was so amazing that it put me in a 2-week book slump! That’s right, after reading this I fell into the worst book slump I’ve ever experienced. That’s how dayum good this book is, that it literally shakes your foundation.
Book slump was seriously slumping after reading this.
But don't deter yourself from reading this, this is meant to be cherished and loved and be revered as how Quincy revers Ripley
Well, man oh man, what in the world, I mean.. i should just stop , I can't , I don't know how though. AK Landow has done it again. She wrecked me, she destroyed me and she bought me back completely healed. Can you not do this every time. I mean every time you do so it gets hiked up another notch and I am just gasping and reaching and hoping I don't fall. What the heck AK.
Quincy and Ripley well, after learning that prologue for Curve ball in Double Play, I was just super excited and pumped to see how Q n Rip's story is going to play out. What I expected was fun , smexy, rauchy , laugh out loud moments that will keep me rolling on the floor. I did get that , in abundance, but what I was not expecting was how much it shattered me to know how this story unfolds and pains you and heals you. Damm it woman!! It was all too much. I absolutely, completely unequivocally, fell in love with Quincy and Ripley. Ok T don't come at me, he is still your man. But damn how do you write men who are so imperfectly perfect. And Q was all that. Anything i write to explain more gives away the plot. Read it and make your own thoughts on this, but man oh man. And Ripley I admire a woman who is secure in herself and gives two fingers to naysayers. With these two it was just magical. Have I mentioned I need to be in AK's world!? Of course we have our moments with the new gang and a couple of the old ones as well. This book shows how much love can conquer and support and just plain is! No questions asked. The sister's best friend, childhood friend, sports romance , marriage of convenience, surprise pregnancy! Yeaaa those emotions come out on these pages and it's absolutely so forking worth it!!
I have just finished this, and it was an honour to be able to ARC read this. If I could give it more stars, I absolutely would. My tears haven't fully dried, and no matter how much I was warned that this would wreck me......nothing prepared me. I truly believed it was impossible for AK Landow to get better......well she can, and she did.
This is the story of Ripley and Quincy, and it exceeded ALL my expectations. I felt I ugly snot cried/balled/sobbed throughout this book because it was such an emotional read, it actually gave me all the physical feels. Ripley is curvy, and has issues around her size, and this triggered something super deep and personal to me, as parts of her character could be me. Just when I think a trope won't get to me, I am continually surprised. If only I had had a Quincy. There is always heat in those sexy moments, and they did not disappoint.....holy heck, I am just glad it's winter here in NZ!!
This book, and these characters, will forever be with me, and when the words "book slump" are banded around, think of Curveball, because this book finishing for me has put me right there. I did think it was impossible, for an author to dig so deep and have two characters give us all those emotions and feels as though I was sitting right there with them, but AK did with these two. It is a true emotional ride for these two which starts from the time they are children, but from that time, they are linked by so many life altering moments you just cannot stop turning those pages. Ripley and Quincy are strong characters in themselves and of themselves, and this is so beautifully shown in the words written in this amazing book. I just can't express enough in words, and there would never be enough positive adjectives to describe how or why you need to read this. This book is my everything, and it was worth the wait. You absolutely need a box of tissues, a big big box, and let the emotion take you wherever it needs to, because I guarantee, you will not get thru this book without shedding a tear or more. If you don't, you have no heart. Absolutely f@$king loved it AK, LOVED IT.
AK is the “queen of raunchcom” as we all call her, but she writes these characters that have so much more dept to them as well. With storylines that pull at your heart strings and have you craving more of the characters, as they are so relatable. And that is what she has done here with Q and Ripley, in Curveball!!!
Their story is nothing short of an emotional roller coaster from laughing out loud moments, to tearful times, to gut wrenching times, to swoony heartfelt times and so much More in between. It was so beautifully written and really resonates with real life situations.
There are hard situations talked about, with so much grace and a flow that will captivate readers, but the way AK so eloquently articulated her words to paper with Q & R’a story was nothing short of pure perfection. And we all know that AK writes the most captivating HEA’s - but the journey to get there a ride I think everyone needs to jump on!!! ….. and you may want to be jumping on a few other things if you catch my drift…. 😉😋
Going into Q’s story I knew for a fact that it was going to be the funniest book- because he is full of those one liners that have you cackling until you literally pee yourself, as we saw in Double Play. But AK brought so much more depth & emotion with his character & Ripley’s. Though you will get those lol moments, the way she talks about the struggles of body image issues and how they can impact you throughout your life, family dynamic stressor that will have you building up walls and other relatable real life topics… I was just so immersed with her words and could not get enough of these 2 main characters. Or their BeAuTiFuL story!!!
I love them! I love this story! I just obsessed over the sports romance side of it (because I’m always living in my #sportsromanceera) & I love AK mind!! I’d love to spend a day with her as she writes to see how her words flow!! She is a mastermind!
And you also get snippets of your other favorite characters from Double Play, which I loved because everyone knows I’m highly obsessed with that book!!!! (#laidbylayton #iykyk)
So- as you can see…. It’s a beautiful story! Beautiful characters and I cannot recommend it enough to readers!!!! Grab yourselves a copy of this && don’t forget to read Double Play also if you haven’t already!
Ripley and Quincy's story is going to be heartwarming and tragic, and It's going to touch on subjects that will make you laugh, cry, and laugh some more, but with AK Landow and her quick-witted sense of humor that we have all grown to love it will help save the day.
Not only will this story blossom into a beautifully written one about a heroine who overcomes her issues by believing in herself. Along the way, it will tell us about her firsts that she saved for true love from childhood.
Quincy
As we read this aspiring, well-written story, we will discover that Quincy has his issues to deal with, too. ( it's gonna want to make you throw something) maybe....
Ak Landow's writing has inspired us in one way shape or form. This book will certainly be at the top of that list. I love the dynamics between all her characters they are all so believably relatable. The love they share, their quick-wittedness in making each other laugh, and the occasional "if your late quotes"
"I was last to arrive tonight, so I have to give you all some obscure fact. Let me think for a moment. Hmm. Baby elephants suck their trunks for comfort. It’s like thumb-sucking to them.” Cheetah scoffs. “If I could suck my own trunk, I’d......😎🫣.. Cheetah..( 🤣🤣)
Then there is Ripley's mother and her filterless mouth. Oh, mommy dearest...🤣 (we should all have a mother like her)
Ripley's mom: Thank you.” She turns to Jack and hands him something. “If you’re going to tear off my daughter’s maiden tag tonight, make sure you wrap it before you tap it.” Oh. My. God. She just handed my boyfriend a condom. In public. Arizona bursts out into her unique snort-laugh. Jack looks like he wants to crawl into a hole. Quincy looks like he’s going to murder someone.
This will be all-consuming, beautifully written, and one hell of a story that I will never forget. You won't either.
Be prepared. Bring lots of tissues, extra panties, and your favorite drink. It's gonna be a wild time.
Don't forget to read Double Play first. #laidbylayton Arizona and Layton's story. How she was laid by Layton. Happy reading. 🫣🥵🌶😎🫶
Seriously, this author always makes me happy. Her books are always good!
This endearing contemporary sport romance is book 2 in the Extra Innings Series. The romance in this book is more of an off & on again relationship, where they fight their feelings. The book is spicy. There is spicy scenes, along with spicy language throughout the book. The spicy scenes are written in delicious detail. The book moves at steady pace following Ripley as she lusts after her best friends older brother. Quincy shares Ripleys desires. fighting their attraction to one another comes to a breaking point where they will no longer be able to keep their relationship a secret, and the fall out could either destroy them, or make all their dreams come true. Quincy is a handsome baseball player, who has been known to play the field. Ripley is a curvy gentle softball player who wears her heart on her sleeve, even after getting hurt. The book is a contemporary romance with a over all light hearted feeling, along with some humor added in.
This book will have you laughing & all up in your feels, too. It is such an amazing talent to write books that are so thoroughly enjoyed! If you read Double Play, you were already excited about Q & Rip! I know I was! I'm not generally a fan of surprise pregnancy, but this was so well written & it completely fits their story!
One thing I can guarantee with any of AK's books, you're gonna have a great time! Quincy and Ripley were both great characters, and I loved seeing them grow, both individually and separately. I laughed, I cried, and overall, I just had such a fun time reading this. I cannot wait for more from this series, AK does a great job building out her side characters and giving enough hints about who they'll end up with to make sure I'm excited for the next book before I've even finished the current one.
Sidenote: the day she writes a book without a Reagen cameo will be a sad day
Wasn't a fan of the set up of their relationship with the age gap. There's something icky about a 10 year old telling a 5 year old that she owes him all her "firsts". Then a 21 year old fooling around with a 16 year old. And 23 year old sleeping with the freshly 18 year old girl who's been obsessed with him.
Forced myself past that. Found the scene where a pregnant woman "jokes" that she hopes her son is just as "hung" as his father. That's just disgusting, honestly.
Even ignoring those things, the book isn't good. The dialogue felt unnatural, conversations were circular and the pacing felt off. There were a couple of cute scenes and emotional moments but as a whole, it just felt like it dragged on forever.
“If you ever talk to her like that again, it will be the last words you utter.”
“It’s not fine. No one should talk to you like that. You’re beautiful. You’re perfect.”
Curveball by AK Landow is book two of the Extra Innings series and like its name it unexpectedly wrecked me.
Ripley and Quincey grew up together and Rip crushed on Q most of her life. When she blossomed and graduated Q took notice in a non friend way. They both started playing professional sports, her softball, him baseball and things got real complicated with them and their on again, off again relationship. Soon they can’t fight their strong feelings towards each other and the extreme attraction when they are in each other’s proximity.
These characters are so complex, Rip has body image issues because she’s curvy, yet she’s strong, smart, sexy and independent. Q has issues with feeling abandoned as a child, he says he will never get married or have children because his parents simply weren’t there for him and Arizona, but he was there for Arizona and Rip when they needed him growing up, he raised Arizona, he’s a nurturer and a defender to them. The side characters are hilarious! Kam and Cheetah had me laughing so hard that I was crying, I love all the cameos from other books and even a couple from another author.
The author poured her heart and soul into this story. It is one that I won’t soon forget. I laughed so hard at interactions between characters and jokes but then I cried so hard with these characters too. Geez, it was a roller coaster of emotions and I loved every single minute of it!
I recommend this sports rom com that’s extra spicy, sister’s best friend with a hard fought and well deserved HEA.
Curveball by A.K. Landow Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Series: Extra Innings #2
Well this immediately became a favorite of mine for the month of July, possible even 2024!
Let me start off by saying that Landow knows how to write an amazing sports romance, sincerely. I love the game of softball and for someone who grew up playing it, it’s incredible to read the game of it in a book. She makes you feel like you’re in the lineup!
I am a huge sucker for miscommunication tropes, denying the emotional connection from one MC to the other MC, if you make me cry…IMMEDIATELY 5 stars, it’s like the golden buzzer for America’s Got Talent. Then the groveling 😩😩 Ahhh the groveling. It’s absolutely astonishing reading a really good book with state of the art Groveling. And THIS SERRRRVED 💁♀️in the state of the art groveling 🫠🫠
But, the sibling rivalry in this book is 100% downright hilarious. I laughed so hard reading the absolute monstrosity of the banter between Arizona and Quincy.
To Ms. Landow, you absolutely slayed this book in every way possible. I am absolutely blessed to be on your ARC team, because your writing is perfection and I feel like I strike gold every time!
Tropes: Sports romance Banter (sibling rivalry) Marriage of convenience Accidental pregnancy Curvy FMC 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 GROVELING MAGNIFICENT 🧑🍳😘 Secret relationship He’s all her firsts 🥹🥹🥹 He worships her curves 🥰🥰🥰
This book is a must read. Go download it on KU. I know for sure I’m going to end up reading it again. I love the way AK landow writes. I’m excited for what is next to come.
AK has done it again … With every book I have read from AK they have gotten better and sooo much better, I’m thinking what else can she do that will make this one a great read. Then BAM Ripley and Quincy enter the chat! Not only is this such an absolute gem but the dept to each character, the story line, every single detail she pours into her writing, the details into each character!!! The feelings that are falling off the pages and melting your mind, heart, and killing your soul…. Literally, this book 5 stars no doubt about it. Spice was spicing but this isn’t just a cute fluffy book, it’s their story from the absolute beginning and taking you on an forgettable journey I will definitely not soon forget!
I did not want this book to end!!! I don’t even know where to start. This book had my emotions all over the place. There are happy tears, sad tears, and angry tears. Ripley loves Quincy her entire life, it takes him years and a lot of mistakes to realize he loves her too. Their journey is one I truly enjoyed reading and I hope there will be more of them soon.
This is one of the best romance books I've ever read.
There's no need to individually list out my ratings (stars characters world romance ect) they're all 5/5, flawless storytelling.
It's so fun & flirty one minute then hits you in the gut with a compelling truth that makes you think about it- such as the contrasts between what we'll do for a partner but not ourselves, and the way diff types of love change us whether we want them to or not.
It's like a mix of The Dixon Rule by Elle Kennedy, The Surrogate by Vi Keeland, Nine Month Contract by Ami Daws, and Wild Love by Elsie Silver. (Also some of my fav reads)
It's a sports romance ⚾, 2nd chance, surprise pregnancy, found family, spicy rom-com.
There's a ton of growth for both characters. I loved that we got this confident alpha who finds out what it's like to be jealous, and an insecure woman who finds out what it's like to become independent.
The motives in this book are on point, they make every action/decision believable. That's really important for me as it breaks the entire escape if I don't believe it.
Spice is very subjective (especially bc some readers equate it with darkness). But for me it's the way it feels new and exciting, the tension and chemistry btwn the characters, some forbidden & specific kinks I'm partial to, and the way it moves the story forward. Spice was spicing, I was so here for it, open door all the way.
There was def some baggage that both characters had to face but the book stayed positive and entertaining, placing the serious in between fun parts. Zero darkness IMO, if your good with the tropes I don't think there'll be any issues.
The pace was so fast and laced with so many interesting parts that I never felt a pause until the very end. Here I am, several days post reading, still hung over from the book and thinking about it.
Complete HEA Took me about 5hrs to read 454pgs of actual story Dual alternating 1st POV for MC's Read ebook in KU
I found this book due to a 🥵 tiktok vid showing the MMC's jealousy (a hot guy walks by & tries to lead the FMC away by her hand, but the MMC grabs her back with a hand necklace and a scowl).
The book was everything I wanted and way more. This is my first book by the author so I can only stand on this one. But I'll def be checking out her other books, starting with the book that came before this one. The only thing I can think of that would've made this book better is an audio version lol.
I think this book will particularly hit with single moms or those that have had to choose themselves after many years of not doing so.
If you're looking for a fun and exciting sports romance that brings the shenanigans, spice, and feels- I wholeheartedly recommend this book for you. Happy reading.
AK Landow did it again, this book is just perfection. You will find everything in it, from the very well written banter to the deep emotional rollercoaster with all the feels, to the hottest of hotness... Quincy and Ripley are such amazing characters, their development trough tout the book is breathtaking, especially during the really though experience they go through. After his wake-up call, Quincy becomes so swoony and perfect for Ripley and that just takes this book to the next level. The inner struggles and doubts that Ripley battles are so real, and you can definitely relate to them, it makes you feel so much for her. And of course, as always, we have the visit from characters from other books and that adds more layers to the book.
What you will find in Curveball - Sports Romance (Baseball & Softball) - Best Friend’s Brother - Marriage of Convenience - Surprise Pregnancy - Curvy FMC - Secret Relationship - Forced Proximity - Childhood Friends - Second Chance
Omg!!! This book knocked it out of the park for me. There was so much raw emotion I felt as I read Ripley and Quincy’s story. The good, the bad, the happy times and sad times, this book had me on an emotional rollercoaster the entire time. I’ve teared when Ripley cried and my heart hurt for the both of them. I’m so glad they both finally found each other in the end. But damn the hot tub scene was 🥵 and who wouldn’t love a proposal like that!! I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Highly recommend this book 100%.
I both severely disliked Quincy and severely loved him. 😬 There were several times I wanted to shake him. SPOILER ALERT(?) He gets it together, but my heart did hurt for Ripley before he did. Ripley is such a strong, sweet, and loveable character. And Arizona standing up for Ripley, ven against her brother, was everything.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲: ↳ Sports Romance ↳ Softball Pitcher x Baseball Pitcher ↳ Best Friends Brother ↳ Marriage of Convenience ↳ Secret Relationship ↳ Surprise Pregnancy ↳ Curvy FMC ↳ Dual POV ↳ Forced Proximity ↳ Second Chance
This book was amazing!! The relationship between Ripley and Quincy was so intense and deep. They had such a history as well as a magnetic pull their chemistry was just unmatched. There were many emotional times that had me in tears and my heart hurting. I absolutely loved how the story from the first book was intertwined with this book in such a meaningful way. There was more to Ripley's and Quincy's storylines than just their relationship which made the book that more interesting. Can't wait for the next story in the series.
I was so excited for this, and boy, was it in no way a disappointment. I related to Ripley on so many levels. Her character was written so accurately that you could almost taste the emotions as they happened. It was truly a magnificent story of overcoming your past and breaking through to a beautiful future.
5⭐️ 3.5🌶️ This book was everything. I loved Layton and Arizona’s story, but Quincy and Ripley had me laughing and crying. The body positivity, groveling and spice. I haven’t been this drawn into a book in a while! Sooo worth the read!
looooved this book so much, this was my first book by AK but 100% will not be my last! i’m not a huge sports girly when it comes down to books but i loved this one!! i cant wait to read more of AK’s books!!
Like every other book AK has written, this one had me in a chokehold (no, not that kind 😉) and I couldn't put it down. I had the full gamut of emotions - laughed (a lot, Blanche may be my new favorite character), I cried, I swooned, and I was angry with Q. I love to follow a character's growth and see them become who they're meant to be. The character transformation was great in both the main characters. The end scene has me tearing up as well ❤️ well done.
I was lucky to have received an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.
So happy to be a part of this arc team. I liked the first book, but absolutely LOVED this one. Quincy and Ripley are phenomenal together. I haven’t had a book get to me in a while. Pretty much had tears in the beginning, middle, and end of it. Fun banter, love all the characters and their quirkiness. Reading about them makes me want to hang out with them and be a part of their group 🥰😅
And let’s not forget about the 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Landow certainly knows how to heat things up. 🫠
Curveball is the second book in Landow's Extra Innings series. The stories are interconnected but can be appreciated on their own. This book features Ripley St. James and Quincy Abbott.
If you read Double Play, the first book in this series, you'll remember Arizona Abbott and Layton Lancaster. Quincy is Arizona's big brother, and Layton's Philadelphia Cougars teammate. Ripley is Arizona's best friend, and fellow Philadelphia Anaconda teammate.
This spicy, best friend's brother, friends to lovers, contemporary sports romance was a delightful read. Ripley's mother, June St. James, moved them to California when she was only 5 years old. She met Arizona on her first day in kindergarden and the two quickly hit it off. Then Arizona introduced Ripley to her big brother and it was pretty much love at first sight... at least for Ripley.
"I'll never forget that first day though. It's the day that I met my best friend, Arizona Abbott, and the day I think I fell in love with Quincy Abbott. The day I promised him all my firsts."
Landow's writing allows readers to experience Ripley's firsts alongside her. She and Quincy are fire together and while reading those scenes is definitely a little voyeuristic, I couldn't put the book down if I tried. Their chemistry is sinfully delicious. As a plus size woman, there was added appreciation for the FMC to not only live in a larger body, but to be adored for it.
"Real women should be smooth and soft like you. I love having something to grab onto when I move inside your body. It gets me off. You get me off."
I could relate to Ripley's body insecurities, and can only dream of finding my own Quincy.
"Quincy Abbott is a man among boys. A god among men. Perfection in an imperfect world."
While the duo seem absolutely perfect together, there is a reason their two puzzle pieces cannot snap together... ultimately they want different things. Ripley grew up with a very small family. It was basically her and her mom. She dreams of finding her soulmate, getting married and starting a family. Quincy grew up with absentee parents. They were always working and never around to make memories. As such, Quincy never wants to get married or have kids. He has no interest in ending up just like his own father. That rather substantial difference keeps them apart.
But when Ripley finds herself in a legal situation, Quincy jumps in to save the day by offering to marry her. What starts out as a no strings attached solution evolves over time, and I loved every minute of it. The characters are realistic and relatable. Their stuggles are real people struggles. The writing was captivating and made me feel all the things. I laughed. I cried. I shook at metaphorical fist. I loved it.
While I eagerly await Payoff Pitch, I'll just try to figure out how I could be Blanche when I grow up.
It’s giving Reckless by Elsie Silver energy - but baseball instead of cowboys. 10/10. I love love loved Ripley and Quincy’s love story! I am thoroughly enjoying this series and can’t wait for Baileys turn!
This book was phenomenal! Since we were already introduced to Ripley and Quincy in Double Play, I felt instantly invested in their love story. I completely related to Ripley and her body issues. The world building and character development was top notch. I think I’ve said it with every book I’ve read by this author, but the emotional rollercoaster was REAL in this book!! I can’t recommend the book enough. I LOVED every minute of it! Even the time I spent bawling my eyes out! You’ve got to have tissues handy with this one!!
