On Sunday, June 21, 2020, eighteen-year-old Linda Stoltzfoos of Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, was kidnapped and later murdered by Justo Smoker—a member of our family. This book is our attempt to share our story of grief, anger, and pain but also of unexplainable grace, kindness, and mercy at the hands of the Amish community—of which Linda Stoltzfoos was a part. We hope that in sharing our story you can experience what it’s like when undeserved mercy confronts undeniable evil, when kindness upends condemnation, when heaven engages hell.
This book provides the opportunity to understand the depths of mercy and grace in the midst of tragedy. Crime impacts so many people beyond the victim and the accused. In the aftermath of the murder of a young Amish woman, the family of the accused share how they had to deal with the truth of the crime but more how they were the recipients of mercy from the family and community of the young woman. This is a book of healing for everyone involved with the crime. But more it is a book of encouragement to show we can strive to show mercy, forgiveness and grace in the worst of times that will have lasting impact. The authors are open and transparent about their experiences. It is an emotional account that offers hope. Highly recommend!
This story in this book is astonishing. A coworker recommended the book to me and I read it in one day. It’s an easy, quick read packed with deep hurt and truth. It really does highlight the power of God’s mercy and exemplifies the nature of God’s love towards us when we least deserve it.
