With traditions, records, and Buckeye lore, this lively, detailed book explores the personalities, events, and facts every Ohio State fan should know. It contains crucial information such as important dates, player nicknames, memorable moments, and outstanding achievements by singular players. This guide to all things Buckeyes covers the team's seven National Championships and six Heisman Trophy winners. Now updated through the 2013 season, new chapters include the hiring of Urban Meyer, the emergence of Braxton Miller, and the 2012 and 2013 undefeated seasons.
OK, so you could probably figure out that I am a big OSU Buckeyes football fan. I mean, who else would even read this book? Well I am. And this book is great. It is packed with information and anecdotes about the program, incredible games and events, people (yes, even more than Woody Hayes), memories. I loved not just the information that I hadn’t previously known but also the stories that I already knew about or those I personally experienced, both bad and good. My only complaint is really silly—the book was published in 2008 so all the wonderful and horrible things that have happened since then aren’t included. How about an update, Mr. Buchanan?
Andrew Buchanan has pulled together some interesting information here and the first half of 100 Things Buckeyes Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die had me thinking it was going to be rated much, much higher. Unfortunately the book went on too long and became so repetitive as to be annoying. OK, I get that Woody Hayes losing his job for hitting a Clemson player and Archie Griffin being the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner are big deals, but how many times do I need to hear about Michigan State laying on the ball so time would expire and keep the Buckeyes from that final score, or that bad water on the train to Wisconsin led to the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season? Perhaps this book is simply a compilation of articles written months or years apart, then I could understand why the same events would appear over and over. However, the book is not billed as a compilation and certain references within it seem to indicate that it was actually written as the specific project it appears to be. If that's the case, some serious editing needed to take place. All in all I enjoyed the book, learned some history (both Buckeye and American), and reminisced as I read articles about people and games I remember and times when I was at The Ohio State University. O-H
If you’re a Buckeye fan or a fan of college football in general, this book’s for you. If you’re a Michigan fan, don’t worry – there’s a version of this book for you, too. In fact, there’s a series of these 100 Things for many teams in most sports. I’m guessing the format for each one is the same. This particular book contains 100 vignettes, which makes it an excellent book to read during commercials and halftime while watching a game. Different aspects of Ohio state football – players, history, fans, traditions, bowl games, coaches, the stadium, and so on are discussed. It isn’t too bogged down in stats so the reading isn’t dry. Although I’m a diehard Buckeyes fan, I didn’t grow up in Ohio, so a lot of this information was new for me and fun to learn.
So, in this Wikipedia era a book like this has to be well done. This isn't. Of the "100" things, only about 40 are unique. The book was soooooo repetitive and as a Buckeye fan I would say I learned next to nothing knew. There wasn't any actual writing, just copy and pasting from programs and media guides. I was hoping for insights, quotes, and anecdotes not readily known but that wasn't the case here. Overall, it reads like a sad Wikipedia entry and was a waste of money.
If you are a buckeye fan then you need to read this book! This book has topics such as the rowdy osu fans to the national title 2003 team to Brutus the buckeye. This book contains many facts about Ohio state and everything surrounding them. Overall this was a pretty good book
Andrew Buchanan has put together a great historical yet relative perspective on what it means to be a Buckeye Fan. Anyone that considers themselves a diehard Ohio State fan should pick up Andrew's book.
