Another amazing theme of Vipin Behari Goyal's new novel, The old man and the Nymph. The best thing about his books are first, the titles of the novels are so unique and different, which has a positive point, because it catches the attention of any reader in an instant, secondly, the concepts or the theme on which his novels are based are mostly inspired from mythology or philosophy.

This novel is based on the idea of Greek mythology’s eternal character called Nymph, which are spirits of nature(must be the 4 elements- earth, air, fire, water) in form of young and eternally beautiful women(indicating life). In this book, there are 3 nymphs in form of young girls named, Melissa, a freelance-writer, Mint, who's Melissa's mother's niece, a complete village girl and Pun, a poor girl and an orphan. These 3 girls enter into the lives of 3 different old men, Melissa's father, a retired Colonel, and a poor village man, Naga, who's left abandoned by his son. These old men symbolizes death or rather say they had no life. But when these 3 girls surprisingly started to live with these old men, all their desires got fulfilled, from physical needs to social, these men came back to life, and they became full of life and felt young around these girls. And there's also a little bit of surprise in the end when these 3 girls went to live with the Colonel in his cottage. Now if I write the whole story over in my review, then what’s left to read for you guys? Go ahead pick up this book now, I bet this book won't disappoint you, instead it'll transform into a whole new life. In fact the strange thing I found out that while I was reading about these nymphs, I was feeling happy and content inside me, I think that's what a nymph can do.

Vipin Behari Goyal has a unique style in the way he narrates the whole story. The detailed description of each and every aspect of life is what makes the book more wonderful. I can assure you that the story is very addictive one, which makes it difficult to put this book down once you start reading it. Read this and you'll be amazed to see how 3 beautiful young teenage girls can change the lives of some old men in a very beautiful way and vanishes when all their desires gets fulfilled.
Thank you Vipin Sir for once again sending me a copy of your book in return for an honest review.

The title itself suggests that it’s unusual read. And I was not disappointed also. Three old men are encountered by four Nymphs.
Greek mythology is inspired by Indian Mythology.Scholars have drawn many parities, but that is not the context of the book.
What I think is the origin of the book lies in Indian Philosophy of Samkhya Darshan, which is the one that deals with origin of life, out of six systems of Indian Philosophy. The ultimate cause of universe is Prakrti which itself is causeless. It could be unconscious element or an active force or in the form of the unexpressed. The Nymph of water, cloud, woods are the elements of nature.
Another factor is Purush. It is the subject, the knower and is itself pure consciousness. Its object changes but it does not change. That is the old man.It could be plural. So all the three old man are actually one Purush manifested in plural and are part of same pure consciousness. This was well expressed by author when all the three old men were admitted in the hospital simultaneously.
The evolution of creation takes place through the interplay of energy of Prakarti which is always nascent with the consciousness of the Purush which is eternal and thus old.
The most important factor in creation is intellect ,ego and mind. The ego has three dimensions according to Samkhya.Sattva,Rajas,Tamas ie.Light,Enegy and Action. The Nymph represents three ego levels namely Libido,Ego and Super Ego. Mint is libido,Pun is Ego and Mellisa is superego.
The mundane aspect is that old man symbolises death and the Nymph are symbolic of Life.Life hands over the embodiment of consciousness into the hands of death. And that is the cycle that goes on till the knower and the known become one.
There is one socio economic aspect also. The three old men represents upper class (Colonel), middle class( father of Mellisa) and poor or peasant class(Naga). The pure conscious is unaffected by materialism. All the three counterparts are governed by materialism. I say three since Mellisa is rebirth of Lima.
There is brief encounter between Mellisa and Poseidon which I think is important to draw conclusions.
Having written few papers for seminars has always helped me in drawing conclusions, but I appreciate difference of opinion.

The old man and the nymph is an engaging work of fantasy that touches upon the most basic physical need of every man and how vulnerable it makes them. The old man and the NymphVipin Behari Goyal The ending of the book is unexpected yet fitting. It is one of those books that you can't put down once you start reading.

P.S I received this book for free as a giveaway through Goodreads.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book from the author that I have really liked!
First a disclaimer: Don't read with a judgmental eye. It will not lead you anywhere in the story. Going along with the flow we look at an old man who by Greek Mythology can be related to a demon due to his perversion is trying to entice three innocent girls after doing away with one girl. These girls are Greek equivalents of Nymphs.
That's how the reader gets trapped into the life of these four people along with two others. The story leaves the reader a lot of freedom to feel and dwell into the depths of each character.
The highlight of the book is that starts off as a novel and ends as a short story. Within a span of few pages the reader is lost without words. Every aspect in the book is an opinion, a thought that someone can relate to. That's something we can't find in all the books.

Here’s something beautifully Greek. The metamorphosis of the silently invigorating despicability of Michelangelo in a Grecian urn by the morbidly volatile flow of the ravaging water was catastrophic. Did that just sounded Greek to you but not looked like it? Maybe it also faltered on the promise of presenting something ‘beautiful’, and maybe in all due chances it went above your head.

That’s how I was like after reading ‘The Old Man and the Nymphs’ by Vipin Behari Goyal. The book may have made complete sense to the writer, there must be ‘so-called Greek’ inspirations, the book may have followed a majestic style of narration, but it all fthe-old-man-and-the-nymphalls flat when it doesn’t make sense to the reader.

It was all weighed down by its own burden. The story of three old men flinging with ‘Greek-like Nymphs’ in an ‘Indian context’ sounds quite interesting. But then reality dawns as one starts to read the story and explores the much obnoxious stuff en route. I wandered aimlessly in a similarly written book which told the story of an old Colonel and two other men who get involved with three young nymphs, or young girls. Each had their own interests to fulfill.

The story felt great in the beginning, but again the execution was a major hurdle. I somehow lost the plot in the middle and got confused. This felt more like a book by a Paulo Coelho inspired fan with a fascinating story to tell, but in far little time and resources.

I respect Mr. Goyal for this effort, which was beautiful in parts – especially the excruciatingly detailed episodes and abstract expressions. But all in all, this falls much short of what it eventually set out to achieve, and hence is a big disappointment. The less said the better.

I received a copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaway Program. Unfortunately, it did not turn out very well for me. From a glance of the synopsis, I was prepared for an unusual read, but not a disturbing one. Also, it seemed the story is moving fast after the third chapter by forcefully drawing connection between three totally different characters. Some of the excruciating details, like the patients and their relatives at the hospital with Melissa's father, none of them who seem to have any significance in the story line, could be spared as well. May be my taste is not good enough to enjoy this book, but I'm just glad I didn't spend money for this book.
