My decisions to invest in Copyblogger's Authority as well as Jon Morrow's Guest Blogging Apprenticeship is a direct result of having witnessed Henneke's blogging moves over the past year and a half.
Don't get me wrong. I was long acquainted with the voices of Brian Clark, Sonia Simone, Jon Morrow, et al before I had become entranced by Henneke's story. But these titans of content marketing and copywriting had been fully fledged by the time I had caught up with them.
Henneke was just stretching her wings. Oh, she had plenty of talent and chutzpah from the get-go as well as the aforementioned superstar mentors. But I've been watching her go from incredibly good to enchantingly great in such a short period of time, I just had to learn her secret sauce.
"Blog To Win Business" is THAT recipe. No fat. No fluff. Just tasty morsel after tasty bite. A quick enough read and yet something that begs for a reread.
Her philosophy does not stray from her Copyblogger roots. Her humor and voice are uniquely her own. The extra bonus is the delightfully fresh and colorful illustrations she has penned and inked for each chapter introduction.
This book is packed with bonus materials and hot-links to valuable posts.
Do yourself, your blog, and your business the service of buying this book. But I would urge you further, to read and take action on the advice and counsel Henneke so entertainingly provides.
This was another instalment in the 'reading the oldest book on my Kindle' challenge.
It felt very much like the blog version of Henneke's How to Write Seductive Web Copy, which I also read as part of this challenge earlier in June. Some reasonably good super-basic information about figuring out who your reader is and then writing specifically for them, but not much beyond that (although, again, like with HtWSWC, readers for this book probably don't want much beyond the basics)
And, like HtWSWC, it felt... dated to read with today's eyes. That doesn't mean the advice in there isn't still good... other than, perhaps, that I'd recommend focussing more on being clear than being SUPER creative and overly descriptive. For example, I found that with a few of the sentences Henneke rewrote to include more sensory words, I actually far preferred the cleaner, clearer original - which is no doubt why I'm now an editor and not a copywriter any more.
But again, it's still a book that's worth reading if you're a complete newbie to writing web copy and blog content, and want a resource that'll give you the barebones basics.
This author really doesn't pass up a chance to promote herself! Most of the links in the book direct you to her blog or a guest post of hers. There are some printables that don't require an opt-in, but there's a few that do require it. I don't know about you, but whenever a book directs me to an opt-in "freebie", it irritates me. She's using the book to gain subscribers.
Don't get me wrong, though. There is some value in the ideas in this book, but it really left a bad taste in my mouth. Speaking of taste, Chapter 6 almost made me hurl. She used so many metaphors about food that I didn't want to eat anything for a while. She seriously overdid it with the food metaphors.
Additionally, the information in it doesn't work for everyone. It's got more ideas for bloggers blogging about blogging. I mean, we should all try to look for ways to help our readers and she points that out, but the examples were mostly for her specific niche... definitely not for mine.
I know we can't please everyone, but the target audience should've been specified in the book description. In the end, I gave it three stars because I still got some good information from it, but she definitely didn't win me as a subscriber.
Simple explanations with great tips. Good read for b2c and b2b content writers Specifically the parts explaining the blog post structure ( headlines, intro, closing and main section) is good.
Henneke offers up sound advice and tips. This is a must-read for anyone seeking to grow business online. She takes all the mystery and complication out of blogging in just a few succinct chapters.
Will be re reading this often as a foundational guide to great blog copywriting. Being a realist, there are some repetitive moments in this book, but as a beginner I’m only benefiting from this.
This book was like a mini class. Not just on blogging but how to figure out your ideal reader. Great information in easy to understand words. Easy steps to follow and implement immediately. Outstanding coverage of the material. Definitely going in my business books to share.
