What is it?Once elusive, now intrusive, the beast has been killing livestock and pets in the town of Cradle Creek for a time. However, now it has moved on to humans.Local hermit Moe O’ Riley has asked his son to come out with a team to figure out what this thing is that’s causing so much trouble. Jake O’ Riley, a cryptozoologist, and his like-minded friends head out to the locations of the attack. However, they’re in for more than they bargained for. Who will survive the night and will there be anyone left to provide evidence of the Bog Beast?
If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be chaotic. The premise was interesting enough: Moe (sorry, every time I pictured the Simpsons' Moe in my head) manages to convince his estranges son Jake to come back home. Some elusive predator is killing off livestock and Moe is afraid things will start to get worse. Jake - along with some friends - heads on back home, to try to help his father out.
The plotline is mostly fine, but sometimes there seems to be a more or less chaotic jump and an error here and there. My main peeve were the characters. I never really clicked with any of them and sometimes you really wonder if they have their priorities straight. As a result, the dialogue seemed unnatural at times as well. The ending was partially rushed and...well...weird. Unfortunate, because it definitely had promise.
I have read dozens and dozens of bigfoot books. Sometimes Bigfoot kills people, sometimes Bigfoot befriends people. Not at all uncommon for the genre.
However Bigfoot raping women sorry game over. Then once raped and quickly going through gestation ( like in a day) being hung upside down, having parties ripped off then cut down through her genitals until she was disemboweled….beyond disgusting and pointless.
Add to that some good old fashioned misogyny and that sums up this book.
“She found that God created her, a beautiful woman, only to be tempted by the devil with sensual desires.” Please men took advantage because they can’t control their desires as did the big beast. Pathetic. Nothing like blaming the victim.
While I would love a new cryptid story to follow, the Bog Beast didn’t deliver. It feels poorly conceived, as if the author did not have a plan for the story. The characters were all a bit cliche, the beast(s) were not believable, and the horror/suspense just never really happened. Add a completely unnecessary and rather lecherous sex scene and you have the perfect recipe for A Book To Avoid. Cannot recommend.
The first 48% of the book seemed to drag. I almost stopped reading. I am so glad I didn't give up. There was so much going in this novel. The introduction of characters was kinda boring but after going back to Moe's town / farm after his call for help to his son. Then suddenly you had to hold on tightly as you strapped in for a wild rollercoaster ride as a monster terrorized a small town. Some trigger warnings: gore, violence, assault, and vindictive monsters.
A great job of writing this book. The story was. captivating. I really enjoyed it. The ending was not what I expected. There is undoubtedly a sequel to this book. I will find it and read it!! Fantastic job. I would recommend this book to all who enjoy this genre.
Quite a different monster. Good story. Had me on the edge of my seat for a while. I noticed a few inconsistencies. I won't mention them because, if you don't catch them, no harm done. I was surprised by the cliff-hanger ending. Killing the beasts will be more difficult than the reader knew at first. Get the national guard
