Great story about when being good to others makes you a begger. Poor girl had to sacrifice herself for others only to be looked down after it.
I hate people that only look after themselves and not notice when others are in need of a helping hand.
This book makes you think about these situations.

An excellent short story exploring the issues of class and patriotism, in France in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian war, despite its brevity it does not lack depth, its characters are vivid and the characters' hypocrisy and snobbery towards the prostitute are shocking and provoke strong emotions to the reader

My first de Maupassant short story.
Interesting detailed character and situational descriptions and wonderful depiction of the hypocrisy and double standards of the french bourgeois during the Prussian invasion of Normandy.
I felt for the courtesan -who was the only genuine one out of the whole group- and was disappointed that she felt powerless to retaliate to their callousness.
