Fire Called

Rate this book
She's the ember that started the fire.
He's the ash that remains when all is dead.

When Emberly, a field biologist with a connection to the spirit world, returns to her hometown for her dream job, she thinks she's prepared to defend her home and confront her destiny. But she's not prepared for the man she must marry to uphold the bargain she made for her life. And no amount of chastising from her ghost twin is going to change her mind.

Ashton, the handsome, reluctant heir to the mining empire that killed Emberly's grandfather, wants nothing to do with his family legacy. But when his father announces plans to resume mining operations, his only hope at protecting the mountain is to work with the woman he fell in love with at first sight—and who can't stand to look at him.

Forced into a fake relationship to keep the circumstances of their magically arranged marriage—and the supernatural salamanders—a secret, their annoyance with each other is only heightened by their mutual attraction. But there's only so long they can avoid fate.

Fire Called is the first in a new contemporary romantasy trilogy. If you like steamy romances, hearing ghost stories around the campfire, and finding magic in so-called 'mundane' places, this one's for you.

Rating: 3.5 but rounded up to 4.

I am still new to fantasy books, but I really liked the description and the cover which is why I requested to read this title.

Characters: I actually really liked the character Ember. I know there was a note about her being unlikeable, but I did not feel this way. I think all of her actions towards people make sense because of what she went through in the mine. Ember's name tying into the fire theme is very cool. I love little things like that in books. I liked Ashton, but I get 50/50 vibes on whether I think he's going to end up as a "bad" character.

The book was on the shorter side, but I thought it did a great job at world building and character building. I still feel very confused, especially from the end. LOL. However, I was intrigued enough that I wanted to continue reading, mostly for the storyline between Ember and Ashton. I do look forward to more plot building in the next one.

I received an ARC from Net galley.

"You're not dying here today if you agree to belong to the mountain. And when the spirits claim you, you must obey."

Emberly returns to her hometown for her dream job, but encounters some people trying to cause issues for the local environment which directly impacts her job. Little does she know that the son of the man who owns that company, is directly involved to that agreement she made that would keep her from dying. Ashton, heir to a mining empire, is trying to work his way up so that he can take over his family's company and stop the damage that they're causing. Little does he know that this connection he feels to Emberly when he lays eyes on her for the first time is his family's connection to the spirit world and that he is also being informed by them that they are meant to be.

Of course they don't want to be pulled to each other because of their differences, and their stances on things, but Emberly doesn't realize that they're actually on the same side until they start to get closer... then she can't seem to be pulled away from him, but she sure tries to fight it.

There's also a super cute sidekick encountered of a special kind of critter, and you'll have to read to find out more about that because I don't want to give anymore of the plot away.

I gave this a 4 star rating on here, and the Zon, but overall I would give it a 3.5 star rating. Some of the story was a little hard to follow, and I wish there was more back story on some of the family backgrounds. Especially Amberly and Emberly. The world building was handled wonderfully, though. The lack of understanding on some of those things because of that made some things hard to follow, but I look forward to the next book for some more clarity as well as the continuation of the story!

Thank you to NetGalley for the arc! This series definitely has some potential. I thought the plot was super interesting but the book overall was missing world building and character development. All of which may come in the next book, but I felt like I needed more to really connect with any of the characters as none of them were very compelling. There was a note about Ember not being likeable but I didn’t think she was bad, just very honest which I appreciated. I think if you’re looking for a simple fantasy book this would be great and I’m curious to see how the series will progress.

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 (rounded up for rating)
Spice: 🌶️/5

This was my first book by Edeline Wrigh and I received a free copy via BookSirens and am voluntarily leaving my review. Fire Called is the first in a new romantasy trilogy and this book seems to be setting the stage for the rest of the series; I definitely see potential in the storyline.

My overall thoughts were that the world-building and character development aspects lacked depth; there were side characters and plot points that didn’t feel wholly necessary, but they may be pertinent in book 2, and not enough of an explanation about the origins of the supernatural aspects discussed. With that being said, there were quite a few interesting plot points introduced related to: supernatural abilities, magic occurring in the seemingly mundane, fate/destiny, supernatural creatures, spirits and ghosts, and meddling supernatural entities (arranged marriage). So, overall, while I feel like I was left with more questions than answers, these aspects of the story are very intriguing and hopefully will be flushed out more in the rest of the series.

As far as the main characters go, I really enjoyed the tension between Ashton (MMC) and Emberly (FMC). This is definitely more of a slow burn, as we didn’t really get to see a connection starting to build until around 50-60% of the book. Emberly may not be everyone’s cup of tea due to the fact she doesn’t just immediately embrace her destiny and essentially fights it, but she’s honest about not fully trusting the spirits and questioning her predicaments as they come (which I actually liked). Ash is more of an enigma, and I hope we get to see more of his inner thoughts and origins in book 2.

All in all, I would continue with the series as this was a light read (finished within 24 hours), and I was curious to find out more in order to make sense of what was at risk and how the main characters are going to address the problems (in the greater sense since supernatural beings are involved).

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this e-ARC!
2.5 star rounded down

This book is alright. The writing is easily digestible, and I'm all for uplifting Appalachian culture and environmental awareness. However, this book felt very... plotless? There's a lot of aspects promised in the blurb that just never happen. We literally don't see the ghost twin try to stop Ember from getting close to Ash until, like, 90%. Most of it was just Ember and Ash constantly running into each other and having tension. Also, don't even get me started on the ending. It really felt like the book just stopped out of nowhere. No plot closure, character closure, or anything. Unless you count "darn I love him" as closure.

I also couldn't really tell you anything about the characters, especially Ash. Why was he in a bar with just a leather jacket and no shirt? Don't know, because he just seemed to do whatever would be appropriate to driving Ember up a wall. The whole lore to "the mountains" was also pretty indistinct.

Overall, it's nothing horrible. It's just also not much of anything to me.

As always, though, please feel free to read this book and make your own opinion <3 Mine is but one voice.

This is the first book in a sort of paranormal fantasy steamy romance series.

I was drawn to this book by the cover, it's fantastic, and pretty much mirrors the character. That being said, Emberly wasn't my favorite character, Ashton however, was far more interesting. The supernatural aspect of the story was front and center, sort of stealing the focus, but I was okay with that.

Focusing on the Author's writing style I quite enjoyed the world that was created and, as previously mentioned, the supernatural aspect of this story. I'm torn on whether or not I like Emberly, she does make it hard, which is a testament to the innerworkings of the character. And the book ends on a cliffhanger without a happy ever after or even a happy for now. I will say this is the start of a trilogy and there is the promise of hope on the horizon. So, while there were a few speedbumps for me with this book, I am looking forward to the next installment to see where the Author takes this story. I give this one a solid 3.5 stars.

I love 🥰 this fascinating story, I was spellbound and unable to put it down. Awesome story and I love Emberly and Ashton, their stories are beautifully written, heartwarming romance 💕 and surprising. Emberly has come home to face her destiny, she has a debt to pay to the mountain. Ashton has a beautiful soul, hidden talents and integrity. He is determined to protect the mountain. Ashton is delightful and fascinating, I love the chemistry between stubborn, conflicted and detached Emberly and charming Ashton. They have a long and dangerous battle against a greedy corporation determined to destroy their mountain. They need to work together controlling their powers, and understanding their destiny. I greatly enjoyed reading the beginning of their journey and eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.

I loved the setting of this book! Very Appalachian ‘down in the holler’ setting that I don’t come across enough when I read! Three stars because I felt it was redundant with the hometown drama from before she left and it came up so often but didn’t really effect the plot. I enjoyed the Appalachian folklore/gothic vibe and think she nailed it with the beliefs in that area. Thank you for letting me check this out!

The first in a new romantasy trilogy, this tale has possibilities. I was a bit disappointed in the female main character but the main male character more than made up for her short comings. The premise is fun and I look forward to seeing where the author takes us. Warning this book will leave you with more questions than answers.

Wow! I’m loving this story so far. Book 1 had me flipping pages nonstop. Mysterious circumstances abound in these pages. The spirits of the mountain are fascinating and a touch unnerving. The characters are well written. The plot kept me guessing. And my goodness there is some excellent steam in the book! Can’t wait for the next book to be released.

This was a very good book. I loved how a different supernatural species was the main focus. I loved the characters and the writing seemed to flow good. I give this book a 3.5 star rating. Interested in what the rest of the series will be like.

2.5 ⭐️ This book kept me entertained for the most part but there were too many plot holes for the story to make sense. You barely get to know the characters or the magic of the town they live in. It felt very rushed and under-developed, and it ended very abruptly.

I love this. A book does not need to be crazy fancy to be amazing. A great read for my ADHD. Big fan, please let me read book 2 early 💝
