As composer Richard Wagner noted, with Schopenhauer one may finally give voice to the secretly held belief that the world is bad. This blunt honesty was Schopenhauer's trademark. Perhaps no philosopher equaled him in relatinf metaphysical speculation to the seemingly random events of everyday life. This volume includes " On Thinking for Oneself," "On the Affirmation of the Will-to-Live," "On Suicide," "The World as Second Aspect," "On the Fundamental View of Idealism," "On the Metaphysics of Music," "The Foundation of Ethics," and other essential writings.
Very glad I read this. Was always curious about Schopenhauer. There's much in this I enjoyed very much and agreed with. Especially his discussion of ethics and the general unsatisfactory nature of life. Plus dude can have a wicked and biting sense of humor.
But...
Didn't end up reading to the end because he can also be more than a little repetitive. You can get that way I suppose when you feel you are arguing against a lot of other philosophers. Plus, you know, wasn't too keen on the occasional ethnocentrism, misogyny, and antisemitism.
