“The Hawaiian Quilt” is a catalog of Hawaiian quilts prefaced by a brief history of Hawaiian quilting that was made to accompany an exhibition in Japan in 1989. It shows an incredible variety of Hawaiian quilts on loan from different artistic and historical institutions in Hawai’i which show the evolution of this unique form of quilting. Accompanied by stunning photographs this catalog serves as both a lesson in Hawaiian quilting and inspiration for anyone aspiring to learn to quilt. If you enjoy the history of the Hawaiian Islands or quilting of any type you will enjoy this book. I recommend it.
I need to say that there is another exhibition catalog, also in Japan, called Hawaiian Quilting: Traditions and Transitions. Goodreads seems to think these catalogs are the same. They are not. I hope someone will fix the error.
Written to accompany an exhibit of Hawaiian quilts in Japan, “Hawaiian Quilts: Tradition and Transition” is a marvelous look into the history of Hawaiian quilting and its contemporary practice. The catalog features some beautiful examples of historic quilts and focuses in five modern quilters, showing examples of their work. The writing in the catalog is wonderful, both informative and approachable. It is almost written like a story and less like a technical text. Included are beautiful photographs that really let you look closely at these quilts as art pieces and practical items. If you enjoy quilting in any form or Hawaiian culture you will enjoy this book. I recommend it.
This is a catalogue from an exhibit in Japan of Hawaiian quilts. Beautiful reproductions of the art and detail of these pieces. Each quilt has a nice write up of its history and maker.
