British actor Robin Ellis, best known as the dashing Captain Poldark in the Masterpiece Theater/BBC mini-series has written his second cookbook based on Mediterranean cuisine. The book is Healthy Eating for Life.Robin has lived in southwestern France with his American wife for 25 years, near the beautiful hilltop village of Lautrec, famous for its pink garlic festival. He is known in local open-air food markets as the Anglais who cooks. Fans come from around the world, including the USA, to attend his bi-annual cooking workshops. His accent is on food that is healthy, while also delicious and uncomplicated. Recipes are easy to follow and suitable for everyone seeking optimal health. Robin's goal is to inspire people to cook. Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in his late-fifties, Robin began researching how to alter his lifestyle to keep his condition under control without medication. His mother suffered from Type 1 diabetes, so he took his own diagnosis seriously. By adjusting recipe ingredients and cooking methods, plus adding exercise to his day, he avoided medication for six years without sacrificing a foodie's enjoyment of delicious meals-- with a regular glass of red wine!
Robin Ellis is best known for playing the leading role in the original BBC series Poldark, based on the novels of Winston Graham. He has had a long career in British television and theatre, including a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He appears in Fawlty Towers, The Good Soldier, The Europeans, Blue Remembered Hills, She Loves Me and many episodic TV series including the Swedish police series Wallander.
A new, updated and expanded edition of his memoir, Making Poldark, was recently released with an extra chapter recounting his experiences being involved with the current BBC adaptation of Poldark in which he plays the unpleasant Rev. Dr. Halse. Also included are fresh photos from the new BBC/Masterpiece series, including photos from Robin's personal collection.
Robin lives in southwestern France with his American wife. Robin’s lifelong passion for cooking, plus a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, led him to author his first cookbook in 2011, Delicious Dishes for Diabetics: Eating Well with Type-2 Diabetes, based on Mediterranean cuisine.
In 2014, he followed with a second cookbook Healthy Eating for Life: Over 100 Simple and Tasty Recipes.
His third cookbook, Mediterranean Cooking for Diabetics: Delicious Dishes to Control or Avoid Diabetes, was published in 2016 by Little, Brown UK.
This cookbook is amazing! I had ordered Robin's first cookbook, Delicious Dishes for Diabetics. (See my review on that.) Even though I am not diabetic, I was interested in eating (and cooking) in a more healthy way. And since I found out Robin had authored a second cookbook, I got that as well and loved it just as much as his first one. Just like the previous cookbook, the recipes are delicious! I like the little descriptive paragraphs about the various dishes and the wonderful illustrations too.
Lemons, white cooking wine and fresh parsley are now staples in my kitchen. This cookbook makes it really easy to eat well and eat healthy at the same time. There are so many great recipes, it's hard to pick a favorite, but Lemony Lentils and Fish in Crazy Water are two I've made often.
Because of both Robin's cookbooks, I've changed the way I eat. I've been able to take off some excess poundage and keep it off by eating healthy, largely due to the recipes in these books.
