Oswald Chambers
262 books515 followersOswald Chambers was born to devout parents in Aberdeen, Scotland. At age 16, Oswald Chambers was baptized and became a member of Rye Lane Baptist Chapel. Even as a teenager, Chambers was noted for his deep spirituality, and he participated in the evangelization of poor occupants of local lodging houses. Oswald married Gertrude in May 1910, and on May 24, 1913, Gertrude gave birth to their only child, Kathleen. In 1915, a year after the outbreak of World War I, Chambers was accepted as a YMCA chaplain. He was assigned to Zeitoun, Cairo, Egypt, where he ministered to Australian and New Zealand troops, who later participated in the Battle of Gallipoli. Soon his wooden-framed "hut" was packed with hundreds of soldiers listening attentively to his messages. Confronted by a soldier who said, "I can't stand religious people," Chambers replied, "Neither can I." Chambers was stricken with appendicitis on October 17, 1917 but resisted going to a hospital on the grounds that the beds would be needed by men wounded in the long-expected Third Battle of Gaza. On October 29th, a surgeon performed an emergency appendectomy, but Chambers died November 15, 1917 from a hemorrhage of the lungs. He was buried in Cairo with full military honors. Gertrude, for the remainder of her life published books and articles for him edited from the notes she had taken in shorthand from his sermons. Most successful of the thirty books was, "My Utmost for His Highest", which has never been out of print and has been translated into 39 languages.

A beautiful devotional.

“For those who loves quotations, this book is an essential.”
I discovered Oswald Chambers bestselling classic devotional My Utmost For His Highest several years ago and it remains my go to devotional for spiritual insight and wisdom. I teach a bible study for women and each member of the class is given a copy of My Utmost. I consider it a handbook of short instruction.
Wise beyond many I’ve read, the quotes you find in this collection compiled and edited by David McCasland provokes your thoughts and illuminates many of the scriptures with Chambers’ straight-to-the-heart-of-the-matter style.
The Quotable Oswald Chambers begins with a brief biography of Oswald Chambers with delightful little known tidbits such as being known as ‘the apostle of the haphazard because of his repeated emphasis on the importance of what seemed to be random events of life.’
The content that follows is alphabetically arranged by subject and includes an Annotated Bibliography, Scripture Index and Subject Index at the end. You can read through it page by page or go directly to the subject or scripture passage.
As an incredible bonus, this book includes a searchable CD of all the classic quotes contained in the book along with the complete, searchable text of the King James Version of the Bible, giving you even greater access to one of the twentieth century’s great Bible commentators.
I recommend this book highly for anyone who loves quotations. It is perfect for quick reference. An essential for any Church or personal library. There are some books I would pay a great price to own. This is one of them.
