Not a bad book by any means, but not as good as some of Kai’s other works. This one features longer, deep dives into various Zen concepts. Honestly, some parts are repetitive and at times I wondered if I had already read something. Kai’s other books feature shorter, more concise stories, parables, and reflections.
The concepts of Zen Buddhism are present in our daily lives, we just don't realize it. Shosin: remaining open to situations. Zanshin: attentiveness to the present. Mushin: be here now. Fudoshin: courage and perseverance. Senshin: release of expectations and judgement of self. Kansha: grateful and humble. Seijaku: sit in silence. This is a great book to return to time and again. It's principles give you power and presence and is very grounding. Good to share with others who strive for mindfulness.
I really enjoyed this book. The stories were fun and a great way to explain the concepts in an easy to grasp way. A couple of times I was confused about what chapter I was on because they do this thing where they go into kind of the key points after each story. And I spent a good 15-20 minutes, searching for the composer mentioned in the section on Seijaku (silence). Otherwise would have definitely been a five star for me.
