Niemand hielp me is het schokkend eerlijke verhaal van een jong meisje dat dapper genoeg was om het systeem aan te klagen dat haar in de steek liet en ondanks haar misbruikverleden een gelukkig en vervuld leven opbouwde. Terrie wil heel graag deel uitmaken van een normaal, liefhebbend gezin, maar in plaats daarvan wordt ze al zolang ze zich kan herinneren misbruikt door haar vader. Als hij sterft, lijkt ze eindelijk wat meer geluk te krijgen: op haar tiende wordt ze opgenomen in het gezin van een familievriend, wat in eerste instantie perfect lijkt, maar al snel wordt haar leven weer een hel. De oppas van het gezin weet precies hoe hij haar behoefte aan liefde tegen haar moet gebruiken en trekt Terrie mee in een spiraal van misbruik. Steeds weer zoekt Terrie hulp bij de kinderbescherming, maar steeds weer geven de autoriteiten niet thuis, tot ze op haar zestiende eindelijk voldoende moed heeft verzameld om naar de politie te gaan en haar verkrachter aan te klagen.

Wow this book shocked me more than any book has before. What Terrie went through is absolutely horrifying and heartbreaking. She was failed by so many people and went through what no one should have to go through. I think she is so brave and wish her all the best for the future.

This book broke my heart. How a poor girl suffered such a horrible childhood. Constantly going from bad to worse. And coming out a strong mother at the end finding herself. Hats off to you Terrie. I honestly don't know where you found all your strength.
I couldn't put it down but hated learning more of what you felt with all on your own.

I have read a lot of tragic life story memoirs, as I find them truly fascinating. And I’ve read a lot of them. But nothing could have prepared me for Terrie O’Brian’s story. At the age of ten she is forced into a sort of ‘relationship’ (Terrie feels this is consensual, but as we know at that age it is nothing short of abuse) and this book chronicles how he forces her into having sex, makes her pregnant, and abuses her emotionally to the point that she fears for her life and that of her family if she does not give him what she wants. The positive from this book is that Terrie manages to make a success of her life and rise above all of the terrible things that have happened to her. Very brave of Terrie to share her story.

Niemand hielp me is het aangrijpende boek van een meisje wat door niemand in haar omgeving begrepen wordt en al op zeer jonge leeftijd moet leren om er zelf voor te staan. Bij het begin van het lezen van dit boek greep Terrie's levensverhaal me vast, om me bij het epiloog -toen ik zeker was van de uitkomst- pas weer los te laten. Dit is het soort boek wat je weer even doet beseffen hoe goed je eigen leven eigenlijk is.

Hoe moet je zo een verhaal beoordelen? Dit is eigenlijk een boek die niet zou mogen geschreven worden omdat zulke dingen niet zouden mogen gebeuren. Het verhaal verdient 1 ster omdat het zo erg is. Het meisje die het heeft meegemaakt verdient 5 sterren omdat ze na alles wat ze heeft meegemaakt altijd terug boven water is gekomen. Ze heeft nooit opgegeven en is een heel moedig jonge vrouw geworden.

Een aangrijpend boek die ik maar moeilijk weg kon leggen. Ik beleefde alles met de hoofdpersoon mee en had sterk de neiging haar te willen omarmen.
