Joyce Mitchell is a very busy grandmother and loves writing books for little children. Her debut novel, Unheard Cries won a 5-star badge from Readers Favorite in 2011.
The author approaches learning how to tell time with just a few concepts relying on pictures to tell the story. Kurt, the dinosaur, invites the reader to spend a day with him. Children are told about a clock having a long and short hand with an hour containing sixty minutes. Kurt begins his day at 6:00 in the morning and ends it at 8:30 in the evening. Each illustration contains a picture of the activity, a clock with hands and the time written in colon form. The increments are in fifteen minutes. There is no confusion by using before and after the hour.
Having been a teacher in elementary school for many years, I am well aware that the concept of time is a difficult one for many children to master. This book provides a good introduction. Illustrations are large and colorful; a dinosaur as the main character moving through a child's familiar routine is a good choice. This book description targets the age group as preschool to grade two. I think that the majority of preschoolers are not able to understand this concept. However, it certainly cannot hurt to introduce the concepts in story form. Teachers could use this book as a reinforcement tool in their study of time unit. Highly recommended!
