This is Book 4 in the Marshal series, the others being Unknown Threat, Unknown Alliance, and Unknown Event. I hadn’t read the first three and worried it might affect my understanding of this one. No problem! It works well as a standalone, though I wish I could’ve met the characters as old friends rather than new ones.
The protagonist is ex-USAF veteran Mac McKenna, who is ending his stint as the school marshal at Blackstone Academy. It’s a good thing his friend Luke is there to take his place because Mac and his ex-FBI friend, Nico, are called on to help the local PD find a killer who leaves neither motive nor clues behind. Finding a link between the two victims, a long-retired policeman and the mayor’s (supposedly) secret mistress, is stressful enough. Then Mac’s sister Maggie goes missing.
One of the things I appreciated about Unknown Revenge is how the characters are treated as real people, not one-dimensional “law enforcement heroes.” They meet up for beer and wings; they juggle time, jobs, friends, and emotions; and they have dogs. The twisty-turny plot kept me guessing. Is Maggie’s abduction linked to the murders? A nameless hired killer is introduced in the first chapter, but we’re not told who hired him. Exactly how many bad guys are Mac and Nico looking for? Pathos enters in the form of the murdered ex-cop’s wife and grandchildren, one of whom finds his Pop-Pop’s body on the front porch, his morning coffee close at hand. We also get a close-up view of how Maggie’s kidnapping affects her daughters. If you like dogs, you’re going to love Roxy.
Before she began writing, Robin worked in public education for 29 years. Her descriptions of Blackstone Academy were like peeking into my experiences, both good and bad, as an educator. Unknown Revenge includes a four-chapter excerpt of the first book in the series, and I’m eager to learn how Mac became the school marshal. The Marshal series will continue with a new marshal (Luke), and Mac and Nico will find new careers in Two Guys PI.

Another fantastic story by Robin Lyons. This is book 4 in the Marshal Series.
Mac MacKenna is a retired pararescueman from the U.S. Air Force. He has moved back to his hometown of Brookfield and has taken a job at a local private school, Blackstone Academy. He's been there for a about a year and has decided to make a move into another job.
At the beginning of this story, a retired policeman is killed by a sniper, as is his mistress. In the midst of all of this, Mac's sister, Maggie is kidnapped. Mac must work with the cops to find his sister and try to find a connection between the murders and her kidnapping and try to figure out why he is being targeted. Can Mac find out who the killer is and where his sister is being held before it too late?
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this series. From book one to book four, you will not be disappointed with these stories. They are well written; the characters are deep, and the stories flow and make sense. You can tell the author does a great deal of research when writing her books. I received this book free from the author for an honest review.
