As a fire department captain living about a mile from the Pentagon, author Bob Gray led a team of firefighters to battle the fires caused by the passenger aircraft when it struck the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. He was then reassigned as a collapse team leader until the structure was safe enough to be handed over to the FBI investigation teams. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would be faced with anything quite as perilous and challenging. But he was wrong. Ten years later, shortly after retiring from the Arlington County Fire Department as a battalion chief, a routine home-cleaning project nearly took Bob’s life. Shoring Up An Inspiring Story of Never Giving Up tells the story of how Bob’s perseverance through his challenging recovery forged a driving passion to help inspire others fight for their own recovery, conquer challenges, and never give up.
I’ve never finished a book so quickly in my life. I couldn’t put it down.
This is a remarkably told story about perseverance and the importance of emotional, mental, and physical health, as well as relationships with family, friends, and coworkers.
I fully believe this is a book that every person would benefit from reading, whether you’ve had similar experiences or not.
I have a newfound sense of strength through my own personal struggles because of this book. It will stick with me forever.
A heartwarming story of public service and resilience
This book tells the personal journey of a professional firefighter and his experience with on the job trauma calls and a traumatic brain injury he incurred while retired. The story dives into the importance of mental preparation and critical stress training for first responders. Bob shares his story of how his training helped to renew him and provide hope as he experienced many unthinkable moments. Most importantly, it left me feeling thankful for a wonderful public servant and family man who truly enjoyed his work at Arlington County Virginia Fire Department and beyond. One who serves the public never truly leaves it, they just move on to help in another way and Bob Gray is doing that!
