So, I had no idea from the cover either what the book was about, or that it was in fact perfectly suited to my 9 year old son. Just a few pages in and I had already recommended that my son read the book after me. It had all the makings for his ideal read; fun, silliness, adventure, mythical creatures, twists and turns ....
It's a really good, captivating story - with old-fashioned Enid-Blytonesque characters; young heroes and heroines with quirks and foibles, all knitted together with excitement and a wondrous supply of similies. Perfect for early teens.
If it wasn't for the ending I'd place this book right up there with the likes of Harry Potter ... only I found myself stopped head on with the force of a brick wall. I'd got so far and yearned for a satisfying ending. Obviously the author was paving the way for a sequel - but far too obviously and abruptly so, and I feel at a loss.
You can't just leave me like this CM Small - I hope to goodness the follow up will be forthcoming!
This was a wonderful fantasy book which two of my grandchildren read and enjoyed. I know when they enjoy a book, as they ask if I have any more books that are similar. I shall read this book for myself soon, as it seems like a book that adults would enjoy as well as children. I was fortunate to have won this book on the Goodreads Giveaway. Recommended.
This book was won as part of a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway.
Although fantasy storys are a genre I enjoy, I found this book very difficult to get into. As the story moved on and progressed through the adventure it became easier to read, but it is not a book I would recommend to pre-teen readers.
