"But Jan, you can't drop out now," Poppy wailed. "You just can't."
Janet Williams bit into another chocolate and peered at the filling with interest. "Ugh, maple," she said. "Why not?"
Poppy picked two more little ruffled paper cups out of the candy box and dropped them into the wastebasket. "Because you can't," she said unhappily. "Because—well, we've rehearsed and rehearsed—"
"You can say that again," Jan agreed.
"And practiced, and it's getting toward the end of the season, and the all-state competition is coming up, and—Oh, Jan, you can't."
Poppy knew she was saying it all wrong. She and Jan had been members of the Mt. Ivy High School Band for two years. At first it had been Jan who was always searching for something new, who had been most enthusiastic. Poppy had gone into the band because Jan wanted to, taking up the clarinet doggedly because Jan played the clarinet. Before the first year was over, Jan had begun to tire, complaining of the constant rehearsals, the endless hours of marching and tooting and sitting around.
I really enjoyed this vintage YA book that I read online at Hathi Trust. The story is about a group of high school students who get to go on a cruise to a small Caribbean island. The main character is called Poppy, and she, her sister Rusty, and her friend, Jan, have many good times and enjoy a bit of romance with various nice young men, too. I love the Caribbean setting. A very fun and satisfying read!
