Ever hear of a feller named Pecos Bill? They say he fell off his family s covered wagon and was raised by wolves! But did you know that Pecos Bill once tamed a colossal cyclone from rippin up the West? Kick off yer boots and listen to this fascinatin tale of Pecos Bill."
This would be a fun book to read to your students about "tall tales". More specifically, tall tales about Texas. You could read it on Texas' independence day, or any other Texas holiday! It has great descriptive language, as well appropriate describing words.
I had heard of Pecos Bill but didn't know the story behind the name. This is a tall tale that tells the story of cowboy Pecos Bill who made the Grand Canyon.
I would use this book to continue talking about folktales. Within my class we would talk about the exaggerated story plot, and setting. I would have my students then make their own tall tale by telling me the character and setting, and then explaining a problem and solution that this character will have to go through. THey are allowed to pick anything they want to make sure that the story is exaggerated.
