I thought that this was Secret Coders by Gene Luen Yang. Do not look up the cover.

1/26/2025 ~ This series has an interesting concept: "decodable," following specific phonics "rules." This makes for a few odd word choices. Also, the size of the book and volume of text on a page is more consistent with "Junior Fiction" (transitional chapter books), but the page count is more in line with Early Readers (I Can Read). The story is decent with code breaking and a mystery.
