Large format (10.25 x 9.75 inches) spiral-bound softcover with 24 photographs of ancient Roman buildings and plazas, each with full color overlay that fills in missing architectural features and other details of Rome in its glory. With historical notes.
The basic overlay drawings very much bring to mind the old computer program at the library that allowed virtual tours of long destroyed ancient structures. Only issue is the small map piece is a bit too small to easily identify what is described on the initial pages, otherwise a quite enjoyable glimpse at the greatness of Ancient Rome.
Each page has a base image of present-day Rome ("present-day" = 1980s) and an overlaying transparency that adds back the original touches that illustrate the height of the past. There's an introduction which provides some context for the Roman culture and time periods. Subsequent pages have brief texts explaining a bit of what the images display. Most of the major landmarks are profiled, but there's no way to fully document the entire history of Rome. It's a fascinating glimpse at the eternal city.
