This was a textbook for a class. As far as I’m aware it’s the only book of its kind on the market and I certainly learned a lot, though I had a few issues with it. The first one being that only six of the articles were written or co-written by Indigenous people, the rest merely relegated what actual Indigenous people had to say to a little box here or there. Perhaps this will be updated in a future edition, because the reader misses out on a lot when they don’t get to hear actual Indigenous voices.
My second and biggest issue was the colonial language found in many articles. I found that rather cringeworthy, especially in a book that otherwise showcases Indigenous people in a very positive light. Perhaps this too will be changed in an updated edition. Nonetheless, it was overall a good textbook and a good introduction for those who have never studied Canada’s indigenous peoples from an anthropological perspective.
