One hundred sixty readings, selected from Bonhoeffer's major works including "Ethics," "The Cost of Discipleship," and "Letters and Papers from Prison," reflect Bonhoeffer's powerful message of active Christian living
Works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Protestant theologian of Germany, concern Christianity in the modern world; for his role in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, people executed him.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer served as a Lutheran pastor. He, also a participant in the movement of Resistance against Nazism and a member, founded the confessing church. Members of the Abwehr, the military intelligence office planned his involvement, which resulted in his arrest in April 1943 and his subsequent hanging in April 1945 shortly before the end of the war. His secular view influenced very many people.
Found this at Wonderbooks today for 3 bucks! Deitrich Bonhoeffer was executed for his faith by Hitler. He wrote most of his work in German Prison. An amazing story!
He was executed in Nazi Germany, a lot of the writings were while he was in prison and some to buoy up fellow prisoners. (Made me think of Mans Search for Meaning)
I picked this book up at the library last week. I was actually looking for a different book by this author-- Letters and Papers from Prison-- but learned my local library doesn't carry it. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life was incredible and the first chapter outlining it was probably my favorite part of this book. Obviously, this book is a compilation of 160 of his writings. They are each only a couple pages. I have to admit that after the first 10 or so I started skimming and skipping quite a bit and only finished some of the 160. There was a lot of great thoughts and a few quotes that I really loved and I copied down. However, some of it I think I either didn't understand or didn't completely agree with based on my own religious feelings and understandings on different topics. (I am willing to admit it was probably mostly that I didn't understand what he was trying to say.) It wasn't bad, just not what I was expecting. I am still interested in reading some of his other writings and would very much like to read more about his life.
