An excellent story that keeps you guessing, right up until the end. I would highly recommend this, as well as, to read other of Jonas Saul's work. You will not be disappointed!
Jonas Saul is no amateur at producing best selling novels and this being one of his earlier works, he doesn't disappoint. I loved it!
Marcus Johnson needed money. He concocted a way to steal money from his employer, who he had a very good relationship with. He considered all angles before entering into the act of taking the money from a store safe, believing he would get away with the crime. However, he didn't realize that there was a nefarious group of people, connected to his employer, who actually owned the contents of the safe and when they find out that Marcus was the thief- they kill Marcus's girlfriend Katy and capture him. Marcus possesses an ability to travel through time and uses it to escape the bonds of his captors'. He returns to the parking lot of the store during the night of the theft and sees himself in the store, preparing to enter into the safe. The problem is, the power of time travel is hard to handle for someone just getting acquainted with it. He hopes to enlist the help of his alcoholic father who might know more about this ability of his, which was passed down to him from his deceased mother when she was pregnant with Marcus. It's not an easy fix in order to get Katy back but he makes a valiant effort and because of an impending disease that Marcus has, time is not on his side.
Time travel has always intrigued me and so when a book in this genre surfaces, I dive right in. I enjoyed this new twist on time travel, which in Marcus's case is genetically introduced to him through no fault of his own. He had to research his own mother's past in order to get answers and still, they weren't complete in satisfying him. The author also explores Alzheimer's disease and adds that into the plot and conflict of the story, which further boosted my interest in the tale.
Jonas Saul is no amateur at producing best selling novels and this being one of his earlier works (2014), he doesn't disappoint. I loved it!
I enjoyed this time travel thriller a lot. In the end, I'm still confused but also it kept my attention the entire time (which is hard to do!).
I picked this because of my Storygraph Taylor Swift Midnights + 3am Reading Challenge where one of them says to read a book about time travel. I found this one on Kindle Unlimited, and was very impressed.
I also loved the Forward that the author wrote, it explained the meaning behind a few things in the book which was so neat to see how his life affected what he wanted to write about and how he came to being a writer. 🩷
I didn't care for this book mainly because I did not care for the main character. Also, I'm not a mafia book fan. I liked the time travel aspect and it was well written. But, it did leave a few things up in the air. I'm going to list them here as questions so perhaps someone can explain. If you have not read the book then do not read any farther.
1. Why was Katy's blood on the knife? She was killed at home by a blow to the head. Yet the police said they had her blood on the knife and his fingerprints. 2. What did happen to the money that was in the tennis ball can? 3. Who was the woman in the store video of the robbery? The police saw her, too. 4. Was all of it just his fantasy? But people did die and there was a trial.
This was the first time travel book I’ve read, it was interesting and some parts were confusing. For instance if the bikers didn’t take the money from Marcus’ car, then what happened to it? He was able to travel in the future after all? The main idea of the story was for every action there is a reaction and going back in time does not always make things better.
I started reading this book around 11:30 pm and couldn't put it down. I finished reading it around 4:30 am. I absolutely loved the story. I also was very touched by the author's dedications to his brother who perished at such a young age and to his parents whose strength is apparent by every word chosen by Jonas Saul to express his love and gratitude for their support.
This is a great book. It touched my heart, made me laugh and cry. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys fun,sad and witty story with a profound intelligence!
I cannot believe how amazing this was for me. Loved the time travel aspect and twist and turns. A book that I couldn't determine the outcome of. Great job Mr. Saul!
