Joey is as angry as a twelve-year-old boy can be. He's angry because someone just hit a home run off his best fastball. He seeks the solitude of the woods to cool off. While there, he suddenly finds himself chatting with a very strange being. The conversation leads him into a number of adventures involving his grandmother, his father, his Congressional Representative, strip mining, major corporations, bellicose felines, and finding your identity, all of which lead to the brink of an Invasion from Fred.
I won this book from GoodReads. An 8 or 9 year old might enjoy this book about aliens from the planet Fred coming to Earth. Joey encounters a talking fireplug in the woods near Joey's house. The fireplug is actually a friendly alien who had taken the image of the first thing he had seen. He changes to look like a boy after learning that fireplugs here on George (Earth) don't speak. There is light humor, sci-fi, ecology, morals, equality, tele-transporting, and an evil cat. Despite the possibility of an impending invasion, this book is a fun read for a young person!
Joey discovers an alien in the woods near his house. He finds out Earth could be invaded by these beings unless he helps out.
Joey gets help from two friends, his grandmother and more. We get fun word play and an understanding of why you shouldn’t just someone by how they look. We see why we should take care of our environment without being beaten over the head. And all of it is told in an entertaining way.
The disappointment comes from how many mistakes there are in grammar, spelling, and punctuation throughout. I began to dog ear pages to mark the spots, but I was marking practically every page.
I appreciate what the author was trying to do. He was very ambitious, but there is a reason for editors. Rather than publish this with a vanity press, he should have hired an editor to help him pull this together. It has potential.
What a hoot! Although 'Invasion From Fred' was written for middle-schoolers, I really enjoyed reading this humorous book. It’s a mix of Sci Fi, fantasy & a sort of coming of age/growing up & dealing with adult reality. Most of the characters are aliens & middle-school age children who are still open-minded enough to accept other people’s oddities. Some of the vocabulary may be a stretch for some younger readers. It was a very fast read for me & found myself chuckling out loud as I read - yes, others were staring at me, but who cares when you can have a few laughs when waiting on lines & in waiting rooms. Hope to read more from this author & would recommend this book for any age!
Can i just say "ummmm"... LOL this book is pretty awesome. An angry/frustrated 12 year old goes off into the woods to sulk and experiences all sorts of things from grandparents to politics and then of course the invasion of Fred!! Awesome read that I think a lot of people will have fun with!!
This is really unlike any book I've read before! The closest thing I can think of, to compare it to, is the little bit of Doctor Who that I've seen. The aliens in Invasion from Fred are quite quirky, but then, so are the humans.
I feel like I've been on a wild ride with these characters, as the plot evolves. The number of characters snowballs, too, which makes it a little tricky to keep track of them, but it's not that bad.
PG rating for about 3 instances of what I consider to be mild swear words. I think that just about all ages would enjoy this book.
I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway.
"Invasion from Fred" is a cute children's science fiction book. Shapeshifting aliens, an environmentalist grandmother, and a *gasp* girl cause the main character, Joey, a whole world of trouble.
The plot is straightforward. There's quite a bit of humor. I think this book would be enjoyed by most younger science fiction fans. There isn't a lot of depth to the book, but it's fun while it lasts. As an adult, I read it in two sittings.
