Water on the Sun

Rate this book
Poetry. Translated into the Italian by Maria Enrico. Facing page English. Grace Cavalieri's new book of poetry is winner of the Bordighera Poetry Prize sponsored by the Sonia Raiziss-Giop Charitable Foundation. WATER ON THE SUN shows an interesting meeting point of American montage culture and Italian cadence-in-lyric. "Cavalieri has an imaginative, wise, and contemplative voice, with a sense of surprise that awakens our thinking. One wants to dwell over her poems which cover a large range of themes from a surreal and dreamlike existence to family love and world crisis. This is original poetry with a quirky and richly fanciful element, yet always accessible to the heart and mind, even as it sometimes leaves us wondering at the turns taken" -Daniela Gioseffi.

Grace Cavalieri is the poet laureate of Maryland -- and I had the great honor of being on a panel with her this past May at the Washington Writers Conference. I didn't know her background, so similar to mind -- from New York City -- from Italian and Jewish parents --nevertheless I felt an instant kinship to this miraculous poet. Water on the Sun is her new collection -- winner of a big prize the Bordighera Poetry Prize. It features her poems in English, and then, translated into Italian. I particularly love the poems where the narrator speaks of a father, a father who takes her to the opera, who holds her hand. I am biased (as someone raised by a single father). "We are small appreciations/Of that larger pattern on the wall." I appreciate the language of this poet; I may even love it.
