In this text for upper division undergraduate students and first-year students in graduate and professional programs, early chapters overview the legal system and its interaction with social science, while later chapters deal with social problems in the context of the legal system. Each chapter presents the history of a problem, describes underlying human issues, outlines legal doctrines and procedures, and summarizes empirical research on the problem and on the legal doctrine. Intended and unintended consequences of law and doctrine are discussed, as well as related social forces. The text can be used in courses in psychology, social work, counseling, sociology, and pre-law. Some background in research methods, abnormal psychology, and statistical and psychometric concepts is assumed. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
