Green Eggs & Weezie

Rate this book
Down-to-earth, darkly humorous and wise, Cathy Olliffe-Webster’s debut novel, Green Eggs & Weezie, casts a wry eye over what can happen when even the best marriages go bad. Through the beguilingly earthy Weezie Polk we learn that it’s not a good idea to whack a cheating husband with a Dr. Seuss book; that Antonio Banderas has nothing to do with a Brazilian wax; and that it’s never a good idea to pee your pants in jail.

“Weezie Polk isn’t a size two, her hair doesn’t look like she just came from a salon, and her wardrobe isn’t red carpet ready, but Weezie is a real housewife and she is about to be left ... for real! Told with a wonderfully comedic voice, this is the story of a woman who will not go quietly into that good night. It’s about fighting the good fight, returning to your roots, and empowering yourself to make the best decisions based on your personal circumstance. Survivors everywhere will want to rally around Weezie. Expect this story to stick with you well beyond the last page.” – G.P. CHING, AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING SOULKEEPERS SERIES

I am more than certain we have all been down a road that never seems to end that somehow ultimately changes us forever…I went down that road in 2008 when my husband’s depression too him down a road I never, and I mean absolutely NEVER imagine he would go – no he did not cheat on me – oh no his story ended somewhat similar to Weezie’s in as much as he was arrested and then out on probation with his world turned on its head, and now here we are six years later and our life looks absolutely nothing like it did for the first seven years of our marriage. So now we have re-thought our entire life from the bottom-up, finances, our relationship, and even spending. Sort of in a similar fashion as Weezie needed to.
When Weezie Polk, forty-something housewife and mother’s husband Butch commits the ultimate betrayal of trust she does what she thinks is right, she lets him move back into the family home until he can get back on his feet – but there’s a condition – so long as there’s no tension he can stay as long as he needs to – well it would seem Butch has other ideas and in my opinion he sets her up so he can get what he wants, the kids, the house, and the car. He wants his “cake and to eat it too” so it would seem…and in a very douche move he creates a situation that would back Weezie into a corner and send her over the edge, thus setting him up to reach that end goal!
I have mixed feelings about this book – while I thoroughly enjoyed reading Weezie’s journey from the ultimate doormat to a strong woman who has found her Inner Goddess – ironically through living in the dilapidated remains of her Grandmother’s Farmhouse that seems to talk to her in her Grandmother’s voice – the very comfort zone she needed to step out of! Through her journey of self-discovery she finds her purpose in life. I found that this type of book has become more common as women are seeking this outlet and means to finding themselves they look toward fiction writers to help guide them! This is definitely a read I will recommend to any woman of any age who finds herself at a crossroads in her life.
Four out of Five Stars for Green Eggs and Weezie only because the story slows at points when Weezie reaches the farmhouse.

This book started out interesting and had potential, but then it got choppy— Weezie is trying to get her life together and all of the sudden there is an entire chapter devoted to blog, but then skip ahead to her new remodeled house.

What can I say? I LOVED this book. In a crowded literary field of perfect Barbies in perfect happily-ever-after romances, Weezie stands out like a real flesh-and-blood woman. So she's a little fleshier than she used to be... who isn't? And her hair may have a mind of its own, but who has time to mess with hair when there's all those other things to do, like a husband to humor, sons to raise, a house to clean, cooking to do, and columns to write? But she's a good woman, a good wife, a good mother, and her marriage is just fine.

Until it isn't.

As they say, the wife is the last to know. Weezie only finds out about her husband's "extracurricular activities" because her young sons accidentally spill the beans after they catch him in the driveway fogging up the car windows with a blonde bimbo.

Then, everything changes.

With a delightful sense of humor and a delicious sense of the absurd, Oliffe-Webster spins a well-written tale about a woman who loses the security of her old life, but with courage, determination, and the help of her friends, finds brand new purpose and meaning in her new one. Her predicaments and struggles are guaranteed to make you chuckle a time or two, and to tug at your heartstrings, as well. You might even feel like cheering when she decides it's okay if she says something a little more off-color than "Holy doodles!" Know why? Because Weezie is a character I think you'll all love.

This is a really good book and scary at the same time. Scary as in the sense that this could really happen to anyone at anytime.

Weezie is a woman that has everything: a good job, a loving husband and good kids. Until her kids find her husband doing something that he shouldn’t be doing. Kids can never keep a secret, even from their mother.

Weezie, in what I consider to be a nervous breakdown, assaults her husband with a Dr. Seuss book, gets arrested and has to spend a night in jail. Even while I was laughing so hard I could not breathe during this arrest, I also felt the struggle of what Weezie was going through to put her life back together and make a future with her kids.

I would recommend this to anyone that loves to have a great laugh with a touching story. Oh, and good recipes.

My Favorite Laughable Moment: No laughing matter, but when Weezie gets arrested.

Lesson Learned: Try Anything!

Overall, I give this 4 stars!

Be prepared to fall in love with Cathy Olliffe-Webster’s “Weezie!” I’ve read oodles of books about a woman with a cheating husband … how she coped, etc., but “Weezie” is truly different. She fights her sad battle with fire and merriment, yet still manages to be heartbreakingly vulnerable. In addition to the endearing character of Weezie, I adored Grandma Bean and her ghostly presence that still lingered in the crumbling farmhouse, baking apple pies and whispering words of encouragement and comfort to her struggling granddaughter. Every time I was forced to set down this book, I always looked forward to picking it up once again. It’s been a long while since a story could make me “truly” laugh out loud, and weep at the same time – oh! – and marvel at the author’s amazingly fresh turns-of-phrase! Finally … a word of caution … after reading … you may develop an intense hankering for meatloaf and pie!

This is one of those books that stays with you long after you've read it. Weezie is a warm and funny character, full of depth and life. Despite her struggles she maintains her sense of humour and finds a way to get her own life back, and to give to others. Through her journey, you are saddened, frightened, and elated for her, and through her faults and quirks, you cannot help but to love Weezie.

The author creates some very memorable scenes, both hilarious and heartbreaking. Though the message in the book is loud and clear, the author's use of humour never allows it to become schmaltzy or preachy. There are also some genuinely heartwarming descriptions of home and family that will linger long after the last page.

Green Eggs and Weezie will leave you thinking, smiling, and eagerly awaiting Cathy Olliffe-Webster's next book.

GREEN EGGS AND WEEZIE CATHY OLIFFE WEBSTER
What happens when Weezie Polk loses it over her husbands cheating? What is a desperate woman supposed to do when he threatens to take the house and the kids in what was supposed to be an amicable divorce? Read and find out and have a great laugh as you do.
Ms. Webster has penned a real woman’s story where her character goes out and rebuilds her life after it falls apart. The reader will laugh and cry over this woman’s journey of self-discovery where she finds that a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle!
GREEN EGGS AND WEEZIE is just one of those books that is very hard to put down. It is chick-lit at its finest. I highly recommend this to women of all ages and award it 5 starts.

Green Eggs and Weezie is the first book I won on goodreads. I started reading it the day I received it and continued every minute I could. A story about an everyday woman, at times funny, many times touching and always interesting, Through her ordeal, Weezie comes out stronger, wiser and happier. Two thumbs up!!

This book is on of the scariest books I've read in a long time. Not because it's bad but because it's so real. And really good. I'm sure that many woman can relate to this story. I learnt so much from this novel. You really root for the main character. Oh and did I mention it has recipes?

Santa gave me a generous pass this Christmas and left, Green Eggs & Weezie under the tree (there was also a well deserved lump of coal)! I started reading with my morning cup of coffee & almost did a spit-take at Starbucks while laughing out loud....very loud! The rest of the book proved just as funny and entertaining - with a few misty eyes thrown in. This is a true testament to what women can do if they share their strengths and stick together!

This book was a good fun read, and I got nicely caught up in the emotions as Weezie did. I really enjoyed the tale of the "green eggs" and the story that followed and loved the descriptions - like the moment she has her epiphany and knows exactly what she is going to do.

I wrote Green Eggs & Weezie because I wanted to reach out to women who have gone through separation and divorce. It's never easy, divorce, but when you add smacking your husband with a Dr. Seuss book and going to jail into the mix, well, you've got yourself a bonafide bit of chaos!

I love this book. It's my heart. I hope you laugh and cry as much as I did when I was writing it.
