This volume read is a marvelous read. I have never been so enthusiastically entertained from reading in quiet sometime. Each book in this series had me begging for Danny and his team to get another case to land at their feet. I love the twist and turns from the psychotic individuals that certainly did not belong among civilization. They are people that make you go to sleep with the light on and you wide a wake. Each step was nail biting after the next. Danny and his team were just the right ones to track them down Dn inflict justice. All I can say about the writing is truly amazing. Flawless. Talented. Bloody Brilliant. I am on the hunt for this writers books. I am so happy that I took a chance on reading his series. I give this two snaps and a, Danny who are we on the hunt for now? Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! #DCIDannyFlint #TrevorNegus #Netgally @barrettrainelle #https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Review: The reason I placed these novels in a crime genre is because these novels are not mysteries. You walk in the footsteps of a known killer(s) and turn page after page of the cops playing procedural catchup. The writing is good and the characters are worth following.
This series could have been really good. With a slight omission here and there, and some effort into twisting the story line a bit, you would have had a great mystery series. Walking arm in arm with detectives as they make small triumphs that build to awareness is not an over-view I wish to reside in. Keep me confused and searching in the dark along with everyone else so I may leap to my own conclusions.
I have read others in this series, but not the first books. I was pleased to be able to read this box set. Book 1 is set in the mining towns of Nottinghamshire during the miners strikes in the 1980s. The language and events ring true and the team of detectives are well characterized . The crime in London seems unrelated to what is going on in Mansfield but then a miner and a met police officer policing the picket line in the strikes start to get to know each other. A miner coming up to retirement dies underground, seemingly as a result of a rock fall and then a couple of women are found dead. As a reader, you know what has happened, but the suspense builds up as the police investigation has few clues. Quite a long book, but well written and full of interest. I`m looking forward to the next book .....
Book 2 is set a couple of years later. It is about abduction and murders of men and is told from different points of view. The reason for these crimes gradually becomes apparent in the book. Well told, Danny, the main detective, leads a special team into major crimes in the area and is a fair and thoughtful boss. He is also getting married in the near future. Another character from book 1 also reappears and this book also ends on a cliffhanger.
Book 3 follows on from book 1 & 2 . Danny is now married, though seeing little of his new wife. At least one criminal makes a reappearance in this book. Again great reading, fast paced with plenty of action and a couple of twists in the plot. I have previously read book 4 and enjoyed it, so will not read the final installment in this box set diue to time constraints, though will definately pick up future episodes or reread books in the future.
All in all a great series, well thought out and each book has enough variety and action to keep my interest up. Reading 3 books straight after each other has been quite a task though, the books and the nature of the crimes sometimes makes for difficult reading (the last book concerns child abuse) . The time period in the 80s is well portrayed and the investigation techniques ring true. All in all a great compilation.
Thanks to Net Galley for this box set in exchange for an honest review
DCI Danny Flint Box Set Books 1-4 by Trevor Negus was a gripping police procedural series that left me always wanting more, even after reading all four books. They all were filled with high levels of suspense and plot twists so that you’re never sure just who did what until the novels wrapped up.
The first book in this series was Evil in Mind. This book was sneaky with the whodunit aspect to the plot. I will leave it at that to not spoil anything, but I will say that you quickly find out that Danny Flint is a dedicated cop who is funny, resourceful, clever, and could coordinate a police investigation, even in the times before Google, text messaging, and cell phones. He was able to solve these gruesome murders of women with the help of his faithful team during the summer of miner strikes in England.
In Dead and Gone, DCI Flint and his team are on the hunt for a serial killer who mutilates the victims in very unusual ways before leaving a calling card.
A Cold Grave finds DCI Flint not only chasing down his arch-nemesis, but also tracking down the murderer of a child found buried in a shallow grave in a nearby woodland area. Can DCI Flint and his team handle all of the plot twists, or will they have to admit defeat?
Taken to Die was the fourth book, where we find DCI Flint faced with some big changes at work, and a hugely publicized case of a missing teenaged daughter of a high powered barrister. Can DCI Flint and his team find her in time? Will that be enough to stop the MCIU from being dismantled for budgetary concerns?
These books are Amazing, and make me want to read more by Trevor Negus.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for this ARC!
A new author for me. I did like the sound of this box set when I first saw it. I took a gamble and decided it'd give these books a go.. I am so glad I did. 4 book box set, I have read this over the week. At every opportunity I picked up my kindle to continue to read. I gripped with the first book and knew I would go on to read the the other 3 back to back. That's exactly what I did. I have now also added the next 7 books to my reading list. I certainly will go on to read the rest of this series. DI Danny Flint 1. Evil in Mind aka The Coal Killer 2. Dead and Gone aka The Exodus Murders 3. A Cold Grave aka A Different Kind of Evil 4. Taken to Die 5. Kill For You 6. One Deadly Lie 7. A Sweet Revenge 8. The Devil's Breath 9. I Am Number Four 10. Tied in Death 11. A Fatal Obsession
After reading the first book I was a little concerned. It was so good that I couldn't see how the author could better it. I had no need to worry. Each and every one of these 4 books were gripping. Superb story lines, addictive reading. Each book packs a punch that makes you need to continue. A little dark, gruesome in parts which really adds to the tension. Great characters through these books, the author has done absolutely amazing and I really can't wait to read more. I enjoyed these so much I purchased the kindle copies for my mother as I feel she really needs to read these.
Well done Mr Negus, I will certainly be reading more of your work. Can't recommend highly enough.
Having previously read books 8 and 9 in the Danny Flint series, I was thrilled to be able to read the first four books.
Danny and his ace team work flawlessly together to solve crimes. The series is set in the 1980's, and the police cannot rely on DNA and other advanced forensics to solve their cases. The crimes are solved using solid investigative measures and going house to house to question possible witnesses.
In this four book series, we have several types of crime, from serial killers to kidnapping. Danny heads up a new division, the Major Crime Investigation Unit, and they investigate mainly homicides.
The books are well written, the plots superbly worked out, and the characters are well developed and introducing their personal lives gives them a 'human' quality, not just a 'paper' character.
I admit that I did not read the books 'back to back', I read one of them, read something else, and then went back to the next book in the series, as I didn't want to have the different cases run into each other.
Danny loves his job, and is happy in his unit, but doesn't like the office politics as outlined in the 4th book. His team are like family to him, and his caring shows in his treatment of them.
If you like Police Procedurals, this is a series that you will love. I know I did. I could barely put each book down whilst reading this. There are some gruesome parts, but that isn't unusual in this genre.
Thanks to Netgalley and Inkubator Books for the opportunity to read this boxed set.
I’m in heaven. I’ve discovered a new author and even better I’m just at the beginning of the series and can binge. I have just finished book 4 and immediately downloaded book 5. This series is that good. It is obvious that Trevor Negus is an experienced police officer. His knowledge of police procedure is part of what makes this such a great series.
The series starts in the late seventies and invokes, for those of us old enough, the dark days of the miners’ strike. This first book in the series has everything. A violent psychopath (or two), the beginnings of a romance, an in depth description of police procedures before mobile phones and DNA were even thought about. I should warn in advance that this book is not for the squeamish. Fortunately I’m not squeamish and I loved it.
The books in the series could be standalone I suppose but why wouldn’t you want to read them all? The cliff hanger at the end of book 2 made it impossible for me not to dive into book 3. I ended up cooking dinner with my kindle in one hand a spoon in the other. I love the characters and the camaraderie. As their lives move on they are so well rounded that you really care what happens to them. I might have a problem because book 3 finished I was straight into book 4 and can’t wait to start book 5. Watch this space!!
This is such a great series. Set in Nottingham in the 80s, it follows the career of Danny Flint and his team as they endeavour to solve various crimes throughout the country.
The first book is brilliant and sets the tone for the rest of the series. The quality of the stories and the writing does not diminish throughout . It evokes memories of the miners strikes at the time in the first book and gradually then moves through the years. The characters are great and I find it nearly impossible to put each book down once I start. I'd strongly advise anyone to get the boxset and then to grab the rest of the series as soon as they can. You won't regret it.
This is a new author which I have not read before and this book has 4 novels I have read the 1st one and in the middle of the 2nd. The 1st one is in times of the miner's strike during the Thatcher years and a lot of police were seconded to different parts of the country to ensure law and order was abided by. Part of the police's job was to take those miners who decided enough was enough and went back to the mines as there was no money and they used what was called a battle bus a blacked-out windows bus. During this time there had been a couple of murders. We do know who the killer is very early in the book but it does not ruin the story. It's interesting to know how they collected forensic evidence as a that time there was no DNA or mobile phones sometimes crime could go on for a long time. Good interesting story looking forward to finishing the other novels in this bumper book, good character make-up and well written.
Great four book collection with strong characters and an intriguing and gripping storyline. The author does a terrific job developing the stories and had me glued to the pages with each book. He does a great job bringing the stories to life with his detailed and descriptive scenes and delivers fantastic reads. Loved this collection!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and are freely given.
INTRODUCING FOUR RIVETING, EXPLOSIVE CRIME THRILLERS FEATURING DCI DANNY FLINT. If you love a good thriller then you will want to read this boxset. Four gripping thrillers as we follow DCI Danny Flint and Major Crime Investigation Unit as they hunt down killers, kidknappers and child exploitation. Each story grabs you from the get go as the author plunges us into a criminal world full of crime, danger, drama and suspense.
The DCI Danny Flint Box Set 1-4 is fantastic. It is set extremely local to where I live which helps to add to my enjoyment but even without that the stories are gripping with many twists and turns that I did not see coming. I highly recommend these books.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for my ARC.
I really enjoyed reading this collection of books. I loved the storylines of the mysteries and I had a hard time putting them down! I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. I would highly recommend reading these books!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Trevor has become one of my favorite authors of crime thrillers. He knows how to grab your attention and keep it throughout the whole book. These crimes are awful but Danny Flint and his team are good at their jobs and getting justice. But at what cost ? Definitely recommend.

An amazing collection of stories that I could not put down. By the end I was well invested in the characters and wanted them to succeed in everything they did. I’m looking forward to carrying on with the Danny Flint books to see what happens next
I got a four-book set as part of a promotion. When I saw how long it was, I put off reading it, but I am so glad I finally made time. I’ll be looking for more from this author.
This is a great set to have. This is a new author to me but I have to say that I really enjoyed this box set and will definitely be looking for more books by him to read.

I thought DCI Danny Flint and his crack Major Crimes investigative unit were a very intriguing and suspenseful read. Great collection. And a new author, for me. Am voluntarily leaving this review.
This is a great introduction to the DCI Danny Flint series as you get the first four books in one. These are well written insight into policing in the mid 1980s. The storylines cover murder, kidnapping, prison escape, in fact everything you would expect. You follow the MCIU (Major Crimes Investigation Unity) led by DCI Danny Flint in Nottingham as they investigate the crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice.
