The Bennett family have lived close to the town of Meryton, in Hertfordshire County, for over two centuries. They have had good times and troubled times, still managing to keep their middle-sized estate, Longbourn, within the family. Thomas Bennett is the current master of Longbourn Estate; He, his wife and their five daughters are barely managing out a decent living, due to his sloven nature, insolence, and indolence. He became such a man after realizing he had married beneath him in the worst way.
Franny Bennett, the daughter of a solicitor, became Thomas’s bride, elevating her station in the eyes of society. After learning of the entail set upon Longbourn Estate, she became terrified; things rapidly became worse as she bore daughter after daughter to her husband.
Franny then became the worst mother, wife, and gentlewoman in England; She constantly criticized her daughters, who she felt did not favor her, and did nothing to further the education of the ones who did. She was loud, shrill, vicious, uneducated, and known as a horrid gossip. She threw her two eldest daughters at each and every man, who was known to have a somewhat decent situation. Ignored her middle daughter completely, all save to disparage her verbally, whilst her two youngest daughters were on their way to ruining the entire family with their wild ways.
Then one day Fanny was out shopping and overheard a conversation where she was the main topic. That one conversation caused her to rethink her position in life, and how she and her family were viewed in the community where they lived. In fact, the entire Bennett family changed in numerous ways, most of the community were in awe of the ‘new and improved’ Bennett’s… but, there were some who could not, and would not, believe such a change was possible.
Three years after the ‘Awakening,’ as the Bennett family called their change, a new family said to be quite wealthy moved into the neighborhood… The Bingley’s. They leased the estate, Netherfield Park, which was only three miles from the Bennett’s estate, Longbourn. Charles Bingley, the head of the family, also brought along his best friend and mentor, Fitzwilliam Darcy. Mr. Darcy was known to be very wealthy, and the owner of a great estate in the North.
As time goes on, the Bennett’s began to realize there is something odd about the Bingley’s… something that rings false, and worrisome to all of them. The more they spend time in their company, the more they feel there is something terribly wrong at Netherfield Park. However, none of them expected just how nefarious the Bingley’s really are… until it is too late.
Before they know it, the terror begins; Mr. Darcy is drugged and compromised. His infamous relations are on their way to rescue him from a horrible marriage. Mr. Collins has come to Meryton and is determined to have Longbourn for himself, of course, after throwing the Bennett’s into the hedgerows,. The Bennett family found themselves to be quite ruined, threatened with gaol, whilst the majority of the town is out for their blood!
Read on to discover the Bingley family’s terrible secrets! What does Mr. Darcy and his family have in mind for his enemies? What happens when the Bingley’s go up against the Bennett’s? Shhh… Let’s find out…
AUTHOR’S Note: There are no sexually explicit scenarios in this book. However, this book does contain violence. I would recommend anyone under the age of eighteen, to ask a parent or guardian for permission before reading it.
If you like books with: mass murderers mysteries that are not very mysterious characters that are black or white with no shades of grey this may be a book for you.
While the story Is interesting, it is way over the top in regards everybody's reactions and everybody's villainy. But I can handle that. What I could not handle was the continuous lack of good grammar, misuse of words, awkward and incomplete sentences, and again atrocious grammar!
Please, please, please get yourself either a native English speaker to translate or else a good native English speaker as editor. It is so egregious, at least once on every page, that it completely detracts from the story.
I enjoyed the book but wonder why there is such a long wait before part 2 comes out. Same with the book Silence. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I have to admit if I were Elizabeth, I would find it hard to forgive Darcy. I won't give it away here, but I know who the Bingley's are.
The spelling errors and random commas were fairly overlookable, but certain things were just awful... Darcy "giggling like a schoolgirl" and Lizzy practically fainting at some sordid details and Jane and Lizzy being such mature, proper women but giggling all the time. This was so poorly constructed, yet I gasped several times at plot twists. So this gets 2 stars instead of one and I will read the sequel to see how things pan out. But I've never wished so badly I could edit an ebook before.
In this Pride and Prejudice variation Mrs Bennet hoping to hear gossip about her neighbours overhears what they think of her. She is so devastated that she brings about an absolute change to all the family, resulting not just in better behaviour but financially as well. Enter the scheming Bingley and Hurst family. Some over the top characters but an entertaining and fun read.
I do enjoy this author's books, so much! She writes long stories with such energy that keeps one on the edge of your seat. Of course, I could not start this story until the second part came out! (I'm still waiting on the conclusion of two of her other books.). Book two came out a few days later, so here is my review; A very clever story teller! Very interesting turns and twist. Enjoyable first half and I couldn't wait for the conclusion! Thank you Ms. Garrou!!
I have so many thoughts on this book, but mostly it made me laugh and not really in a good way... I will be reading part 2 because I feel like I've committed to this book at this part and they definitely left off in the middle of one book. As another reviewer suggested, I'm along for this rollercoaster ride.
As many others have noted, this novel reads like a dictated, unproofread piece of work. Beyond the laughable incorrect words, plurals, nominative vs objective case, the writing is incredibly simplistic and repetitive. Nevertheless, the author certainly has a good imagination, and so the bones of the plot are diverting.
Sorry to say this for me was a skip to the end book. The wrong word usage killed this author needs to check the dictionary more for example assumptive rather than presumptive heir , titter instead of thither to highlight 2 in a long list. Its long and boring in my opinion.
Just finished both books in this 2 part series. This should have been one book. This should have been thoroughly proof-read. The author should have put A Lot more effort into researching her subject matter and learning how to write, in English. This is not really a pride and prejudice variation. The names ard location are the same, but the resemblances are weak. The Bingleys are horrible and get worse in the second book. (Did I mention that's one too many?) I read the reviews & gave this a chance anyway. Wish I hadn't.
This book is One of two did I read the second? Yes I did . Why? Because you don't get off the roller coaster at the top of the hill you scream all the way to the bottom.
Importantly I did not pay for this book I Borrowed it from Kindle Unlimited (do I pay for Kindle unlimited? Yes I do. DO authors receive money from KU? Yes they do but this is a via a middleman so I am not directly to blame)
This book desperately need three things. An Editor, a proofreader and a fact checker.
There are so many things that are just bizarre about it I barely know where to begin. Is someone is going to come along and tell me this is a parody? For I dearly love to laugh and there is nothing funny in these books, at least not intentionally
We begin in creation of the Longbourn entail who knows why I have always been satisfied with that there was one. The author makes Mr. Collins' antecedents utterly ridiculous and bizarre. Of course everyone in the book is a bit bizarre.
Mr Bennet had a brother who ran off and joined the Navy and was lost at sea. Mrs Bennet is her absurd self things go on and on.
Then one day Mrs Bennet has an AWAKENING (Author's emphasis not mine) and realizes that she is an idiot and her youngest daughters are trollops and sets out to rectify this and she drags Mr. Bennet along for the Make over....
3 years later the Bennets are calm, cool, collected, fit, fun and disliked. See apparently Meryton is an open air mental hospital and Mrs Bennet's improvement has either annoyed or been dismissed by the locals
Like any day now old Fanny will be back.
Longbourn is still Entailed but an improved Mr. Bennet has invested wisely with his brother in law (aka The Widow Maker) and is rich rich rich filthy rich But humble really humble
Into this come the Bingleys and Darcy ... but all is not what it seems as the Bingleys are playing everyone false and have a nefarious plan up their sleeves.
Both the improvement of the Bennets and the evil of the Bingleys are really clever plot twists which would have been interesting in a well written book but here they just quickly go to 11.
There are so many Regency Errors, grammar errors, spelling errors I could barely keep count
Apparently the author heard that Contractions weren't used during the Regency so she I can only say created a phrase that hurt my brain of the Clock as in it is five of the clock or dinner will be at 7 of the clock. Yes that is what o'clock means. O'clock was in common use by 1720 and it thought to have medieval origins
Using it once would make one appear daft using it dozens of times makes one appear willfully ignorant. I barely recall any specific time references in P&P and you certainly don't need them in a variation. In a house like Longbourn or Netherfield meals are announced except breakfast which is self serve...
I really, really like this author's work and her imagination. I like her plots, which are completely over-the-top but which celebrate strong family loyalty (whether by blood or found families) and this book is no different. In this particular story, the Bennets have become a strong family together after Mrs Bennet undergoes a massive change in her character. Then the Bingleys arrive and everything falls apart. Jealousy and envy play apart in the Bennets' downfall, but so does the manipulative actions of so-called friends, which all leads to a cliffhanger ending, and certain events that make me wonder whether Darcy will ever be able to redeem himself as a romantic hero (though he's a victim of all of this as well, I'm hoping we see an epic grovel in the future.) Anyway, everything becomes terrible despite the Fitzwilliams trying to step in and save the day, the Bennets are scattered and ruined, and then it ends. I can’t wait to read part 2 and to see how everything unfolds and comes to a conclusion. I highly recommend!
Extra note: this book needs to become a movie or tv series.
Want a suspense filled story? You found it! Want a magnificent storyline with lots of emotional toll? Once, again you found it! Looking for horrible Bingley’s? Ye, you found it! Darcy and Caroline to be married? Elizabeth and Jane gone? What is happening in Meryton? This story will keep you turning the pages to find on what's happening. I truly love the secondary players in this storyline. So much emotion whether it’s crying, surprise, or laughing this story is an excellent read. This story hits so many little genres with in the bigger picture. The storyline only is sufficiently completely well written. The “bad” character is even worse and some you wouldn’t expect! But even better is how this part ends, is on the depressing side, but it brings together a relatively close relationship’s that are what counts. More for mature readers because b of adult situations, but a definite read
The thought of someone accidentally falling on someone as a cause to marry is weak (especially if that someone is losing consciousness), but I know many writers use that ploy.
What kept me going...
I don't do well with angst, so I readily admit I skipped ahead a few times to see how long it would take for some relief; only then did I return to reading like the average person. Even with that being said, I didn't want to stop reading.
There are a few inconstancies, but overall 4.5 stars.
- Engaging storyline. I was caught up in the messiness going on in Meryton and Bennet's improvements.
- Edwin "The Godfather" Gardiner is always a win for me.
- Darcy is duped, and the villains reign supreme... for now.
- Lady Catherine and Wickham are mentioned but have not made an appearance.
The plot is creative and interesting, and I applaud the author for her creativity and imagination. However, the egregious errors throughout were so distracting that I almost abandoned the book in frustration about 2/3 of the way in. However, I kept reading because I wanted to know where the story was going and the typos, tense changes, misspelling of the character’s names (Bennett and Nickles) lead me to conclude that this was the product of dictation or it was handed over to AI for completion. These comments are kindly meant, and I encourage Ms. Garrod to hire a good editor and re-release the story with the integrity that it deserves.
Interesting premise. I liked the "villains" in this story since they're not the usual.
Lots of growth from Franny Bennet and how the sisters handled their convos with their mother felt pretty true to character.
However. I could not get over the constant references to the AWAKENING and later on to RETRIBUTION. They kept being mentioned just like that throughout the text, in conversations with other people, in the characters' introspections.
Also, since we have Better-behaved Bennetts all around, Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship started out nice for me. I could have been into that. However with the plot, I think the author watered down Darcy a lot and it was such a shame.
Interesting story where the Bingleys aren't who or what they seem. The Bennet family is much improved and several in the town are jealous to the point of being dangerous. Mr Bennet has several relatives on his mothers side who are more powerful than even the Royal family! Caroline sets up Elizabeth and Jane and manages to compromise Darcy. Unbeknownst to many Earl Matlock is an investor and friend of Gardiner and came to Meryton to investigate the situation and Bingley family. Its a two part story but well worth reading!
Low angst but lots of DRAMA!! Mrs Bennet has an awakening/epiphany and decides that she doesn't like herself very much. She makes an effort to change with the rest of her family and the Bennets become a calm, educated, wealthy and loving family. To bad their neighbors think they are faking. When the Bingleys and Fitzwilliam Darcy come to town, things get a bit escalated. There are lots of people who have it out for the Bennets but they don't realize who they are dealing with.
Interesting storyline for this variation. Unique cast of characters. It is written in the 'telling' format, not a favorite, but it has a fast pace. Typos and grammar mistakes are quite atrocious and shocking in this digital world! The author needs a program that has grammar check!
If this story had been edited better I would have given it 5 stars. The most annoying thing was how the author kept changing tenses, sometimes within a single paragraph. It made for very disjointed reading. The story was good enough that I kept on reading and will read the 2nd volume, but if that kind of thing really annoys you this book is best avoided.
Hilarious. Worth reading just to note all the mistakes. Such a real shame as it has the makings of a decent book. Punctuation, spelling, grammar, wrong words. I could go on but it’s more fun to find out for yourself. It reads like a Wild West story complete with dialect from the Deep South. Sorry
But for all the typos, grammar errors, misspelled words and incorrect words it was still fun to read. Sorry but I hate to see errors of that nature in a published book. I like the "sequels" to some of the classic books.
I liked the OOC characters, the plot was unique and interesting. I was very happy to see the second part was available and I didn't have to wait. All in all, an enjoyable read, but not necessarily something I would reread..one to Part 2!
Many of the words and terms used are incorrect and, therefore, confusing. The plot is interesting but rendered ridiculous by the dialogue and actions of the characters.
very interesting premise, but desperately needs an editor
The story plots was well thought out and engaging. It was marred by the awkward dialogue and sentence structure. Also, I am not a fan of cliffhanger endings. This was a pleasant read, but not one I will read again.
So far I am trying not to murder them! And all those supposed "friends" of the Bennets. The idea and intense situations are completely engaging and have kept me glued to the story. Can't wait to read the second part!
This is another completely wild variation! Selene Garrou really knows how to draw your attention and keep you enthralled! Immediately going to part 2! Need conclusion!
This is one amazing and awesome book. I am very glad that I have book 2 to start reading immediately. Believe me when I say that this is extremely compelling reading!
